Fieldcrest's Fastest
Doffers Are Decided
The Superdoffer contests at
Fieldcrest moved forward last
week with the naming of more
mill champions and the first
competition between doffers
from different Fieldcrest plants.
The champion filling doffer at
the Alexander Sheeting Mill is
Babe Kimbrell with Bud
Ledbetter as the runner-up.
Tracy Gilbert was previously
announced as Alexander’s top
warp doffer.
At the Bedspread Mill, Phillip
Dickerson, Fieldcrest’s
champion warp doffer in the 1973
Superdoffer Tournament, was
the mill winner. Runners-up
were Shuford Lollis and James
Broadnax.
The Fieldale Towel Mill has
not yet completed its doff-offs
for the mill championship. When
the Fieldale winner is known, a
three-way contest will be held
for the Bedspread Mill, Draper
Sheeting Mill and Fieldale Towel
Mill.
Melvin Walton, warp doffer,
and Ray Pruitt in the filling
division, are the champion
doffers of the Draper Sheeting

Leap Year Keeps Them Young?
How would you like to have a
birthday only every four years?
Sound far-fetched?
It isn’t. Actually there are six
Fieldcrest employees, all born
on February 29, who have
exactly that situation.
James Millner, Mechanical
Development Department, says
it’s no problem for him. He just
celebrates on February 28 when
there is no 29th.
The computer at the General
Offices tells us that other em
ployees who only have birthdays
every four years are W. Curtis
Rogers, North Carolina
Finishing; Crystal M. Jones,
Automatic Blanket Plant;
Wilma B. Laney, Columbus
Towel Mill; Johnny L. Martin,
Columbus Towel Mill; and Susie
M. Miles, Phenix City Plant.
Leap Years occur every four
years because, according to the
World Almanac, the true year,
based on the movement of the
sun and the stars, is 365'/4 days
long. Therefore, one day is
gained every four years.
By a decree of Pope Gregory
XIII in the year 1582, the day
following October 4, was called
October 15, thereby gaining the
ten days which had been lost
JAMES MILLNER
Leap Year No Problem
since the first calendar was
instituted by the ancient
Romans.
His action culminated in what
is called the Gregorian
Calendar, which is still in use
today, making every fourth year
a 366-day year, rather than a 365
day year.
Mill, as previously announced.
Elzie Collins, champion warp
doffer at the Columbus Towel
Mill, was at the Alexander
Sheeting Mill February 16 and
doffered against Tracy Gilbert
in the first inter-mill competi
tion. Mr. Gilbert was to go to the
Columbus Towel Mill today
(February 23) for the last half of
the competition between the two
mills.
Once the doff-offs among the
Bedspread, Draper Sheeting and
Fieldale Towel Mills have been
completed, the fastest doffer will
face the winner of the
Alexander-Columbus competi
tion to determine the company
champion in the warp division.
Also, Babe Kimbrell and Ray
Pruitt will compete in the filling
division to decide who will
represent the company in that
division.
Meanwhile, some 2,200 doffers
in 31 textile companies across
the country are “flipping ’em
out” as intramural competition
picks up momentum in the
world’s most unusual athletic
event.
The National Superdoffer
Tournament, sponsored by the
American Textile Manu
facturers Institute, is a contest
to recognize and reward the
woman or man with the fastest
hands in yarn manufacturing.
Doffers, as they are
appropriately called, harvest
filled bobbins or quills of yarn
from spinning machines.
Doffers who can remove bobbins
and replace them with empties
the fastest will share in cash
prizes totaling more than $5,000.
