“Accidents—A Cost Against Profit
The association has 600 members
from across the South who work with
woolen and worsted manufacturing
systems in making yarns for
blankets, rugs, carpets and apparel
in the textile industry.
“Accidents are a cost against
profit and who among us is not
concerned about that?” W. E.
Vaughan-Lloyd, Jr., safety
representative for the N. C.
Industrial Commission, asked at the
recent monthly safety meeting at
the Blanket Greige Mill.
Speaking to supervisors from the
Blanket Greige and Non Woven
Mills, Vaughan-Lloyd pointed out
that surface costs in apparent minor
accidents are only the “tip of the
iceberg.”
He said the primary causes of
accidents fell into three categories:
acts of God (2 percent), unsafe
conditions (10 percent) and unsafe
acts (88 percent).
Prevention is the way to stop
accidents before they happen, he
said, and this can be achieved
through behavior reinforcement,
motivation, replacing improper
habits with proper actions and
communication.
To illustrate, the safety
representative reviewed three
accident reports from the mills with
the supervisors and they discussed
the values of accident investigation,
follow-up and prevention.
“Production versus safety,” he
said, “look at your priority.”
