, Silzer Joins Fieldcrest History Commemorates Robert F. Silzer joined Fieldcrest as director of Personnel Research and Training, effective October 2. A graduate of Southern Illinois University, he received a master’s degree in psychology from Florida State University and a Ph. D. in psychology from the University of Minnesota. Prior to joining Fieldcrest, he was associated with a psychological consulting firm in Minneapolis. He also served as a surgical technologist in the U. S. Army for three years. Dr. Silzer’s responsibilities will include the full range of training and management development activities. Dr. Robert Silzer A native of Chicago, he is married to Donna Hencken and the couple make their home in Greensboro. Some of the significant events in the history include the taking over of Mebane’s mills by Marshall Field and Company in 1910, construction of the Fieldale Towel Mill in 1917, the unveiling of the first Karastan “Wonder Rug of America” in 1928, the operation of the mills during World War II when more than 2,000 employees served in the armed forces, publication of the first issue of The Mill Whistle in 1942 and how the paper got its name, and the formation of Fieldcrest Mills, Inc. in 1953. The most important elements in the company’s past, however, are the thousands of employees who over the last 75 years have contributed so much to ite success. Many present employees and retired employees, particularly those in the Eden- Fieldale area, are the third and fourth generation of their families to work the the company. It is to these people and all of Fieldcrest’s employees that the history is dedicated, and for them that it was written. The book will be mailed to retired employees and distributed in the plants and offices to active employees before the end of the year. Fieldcrest Negotiates Sale Of Mt. Holly Spinning Mill Spray Cotton Mills and Fieldcrest Mills, Inc., have jointly announced that negotiations for the purchase of Fieldcrest’s Mount Holly Spinning Mill by Spray Cotton are under way. It Is anticipated that the transfer of ownership would be effective October 30,1978. Spray Cotton Mills Is located In Eden, North Carolina, and employs about 300 persons. Its primary product Is cotton yarn which It sells to weavers and knitters. Mount Holly Spinning Mill, located In Mount Holly, North Carolina, was acquired by Fieldcrest In 1963 and has supplied spun yarn to various Fieldcrest plants as well as sales yarn. This plant employs approximate ly 100 persons and has about 8,600 spindles. Mount Holly Spinning will be continued as a spinning operation and will operate as an Independent but wholly-owned subsidiary of Spray Cotton, according to Weisford Bishopric, President of Spray Cotton Mills. It Is anticipated that employment will continue at current levels and the management team will continue with Spray Cotton under the direction of Howard Justice, current plant manager. Moving Up ... SARA PENLEY, to shift foreman. Spinning, Karastan Spinning Mill from spinner at that mill. She has been with the company since 1958. r\ :: Harry Brinkley 45 Years Harry L. Brinkley, a shift foreman at N. C. Finishing Company, has achieved 45 years of continuous service and has been honored by management. He received a 45-year service emblem, a $45 gift certificate for company merchandise and a letter of commendation from W. C. Battle, president of Fieldcrest Mills, Inc. Brinkley began in 1933 in sj)ecial work in Dyeing and later in the Power Department. He has also held the jobs of second hand and electrical foreman, prior to his present position, in the Power Department.
