We ask the indulgence of our read
ers for several issues c.s we have not
yet succeeded in-getting our affairs
arranged in a systematic manner.
Miss May Rice, one of the teach
ers in the public school, left yesterday
for Winstcn, where she will visit
friends before returning to her home
in Farmville, Va.
Sheriff Davis was called to Cherry-
ville this morning to investigate the
larceny of some hams. A party is
suspicioned and the sheru*.' will likely
sccure the guilty person.
Mr. J. H. Matthews, of the J. M.
Belk Co., spent Sunday in Charlotte.
He was accompanied home by Mrs.
Matthews, who had bf^en visl'ting her
father, Mr. Will Robinson.
Mr. and Mrs. Ed. Whitesides left
Monday for Richmond to take in the
reunion. From there they will go 'to
Pittsburgh, Pa., where they will visit
their daughter, Mrs. Hanna.
The many friends of Col. Thomas
L. Craig, who has been confined to
his home fcr some weeks, will be
glad to know that he is s':eadlly im
proving and will be able to be on the
streets soon.
Miss Mariemma Murray who has
been visiting Mrs. E. D. Atkins, left

Mrs. W. L. Coon has moved into
the Colonial Hotel and taken charge.
Miss Marshall, who formerly ran the
hotel, has given it up, and stored her

Workmen are engaged in putting
a sign on the front of^, the new post-
offt^e building. It wiVi^re?id “United
States Post Office.’* There has been
some controversy among the onlook
ers as to whether “Postoffice” is one
word or two, but nevertheless the
man who is doing the job makes it
two words.
The med-ing that has been runnin,
at the First Baptist church closed
last night. Rev, W. F. Watson, of
Alexandria, Va., has been here as
sisting the pastor. There was much
interested manifested in L!ie services
and much good will come to Gastonia
from the meeting. It was a pleas
ure to the people of Gastonia to have
Dr. Watson with them for this series
of services.
The voters of Gastonia are very
slow about registering for the com
ing school bond election. Up to the
present there have been only abou':
150 who have signified a desire to
vote. This, as almost everything
else, is being put off until the last
moment.: It is expected that within
the next four weeks interest will pick
up regarding the matter. This is
very important and should be at
tended to before too late. “Register
now,” is the slogan.
Spec-al Rates to Gastonia and Free '
Checking Service. [
The P. & N. Railroad, always alive j
to the best interests of those whom it j
may serve, has put on a special rate ■
from Charlotte and intermediate j
points to Gastoni^ which is about j
the same as one fare. This rate went
on Tuesday and is good on every week
day and Sunday after 6 p. m. In con
nection with this the Chamber of
Commerce has Inaugurated a pack
age service and will keep the office
open every Saturday evening for the
purpose of storing packages for those
who wish to go on the tra'n. All the
customer has to do is to direct the
store from which they make their
purchase to send the bundles to the
office of the Chamber of Commerce.
There they will be turned over to the
clerk and when the party gets ready
to go home they can call at the office,
which is near the station and get
their packages. This will do away
with the bother of running all over
tov/n and gathering up a bundle here
and yonder. It is to be hoped that!
the people will take advantage of this;
service and if they do it will work to
the advantage of both merchant and
the customers.
Street: Improvement and Water Ex- j
tension Bonds Sold. '
Bids were opened last night at the |
city hall for the $99,000 bond issue of i
the City of Gastonia. The best bid j
made was that of the Citizens Na- i
tional Bank of this city and they were j
awarded the bonds. The Citizens j
bid was to allow the town par for
che bonds and pay the accrued inter
est, which amounted to about $450,
and that they be allowed $1,500 for
attorney’s fees, printing of the bonds
and other expenses incidental to the
issuing of the same. These bonds
were sold one time before but an er
ror was found in the bill and they
were never paid for. The last legis
lature passed an act which did make
the bonds valid, and they are now
to be turned into cash. The money
will be used for street improvement
and water extension.

JOHNNY REBELS
MARCH THROUGH WET.
Veterans Yelled Themselves Hoarse
For Wilson.—No More War For
Theirs.
Richmond, Va., June 1.—Thousands
of veieran survivors of the Confed
eracy in reunion here loday trudged
through torrents of rain to cheer to
the echo the hopes expressed by their
leaders that peace in America may
not be disturbed by the war in Eu
rope. Grizzled wearers of the gray en
thused in the 25th annual reunion of
the United Confederate Vdterans re
iterated their loyalty to the union,
shouted themselves hoarse in pledg
ing , support to the President of the
United Scates in any crisis and bowed
assent to prayers that those who
guide the destinies of the republic
might be blessed with wisdom to deal
with pending international affairs.
More than 5,000 of the sturdy fol
lowers of Lee are here, and at the
opening session of their reunion, shar
ed their plaudits alike for the rollick
ing air of “Dixie” and martial
strains of “The Star Spangled Ban
ner” while the Stars and Stripes flar
ed from the housetops of the old
capital of the Confederacy.
It was a day of tribute to their
own departed heroes and one of fer-
i vent hope that their sons may never
j have to experience the baptism of
j fire that was theirs. This sentiment,
, uppermost in addresses of the day,
! brought the veterans to their feet re-
! peatedly at convention hall, but the
i climax came at' the close of an ad-
i dress by Dr. Henry V/. Battle.

Philatheas Entertain Baracas of'
Main Street* Methodist Church. j
On Tuesday evening at Main Street!
Methodist Church the Junior and Sen-;
ior Philatheas entertained the Ba-!
racas at a beautifully appointed re- ^
ception.
The League room was beautifully
decorated with baskets of crimson
ramblers. There a splendid pro- j
gramme of songs, readings and musi- j
cal selections was rendered.
All were then invited into the Sun
day School room, where the recep
tion was held. The room was very
attractive in its decorations of pink
roses and white lilies. The Atkins or
chestra furnished music throughout
the evening, adding much to the pleas
ure of all present.
Pink and white ices with cake were
served. X.
