Vol. I
RALEIGH, N. C., APRIL 15, 1929
No. 3
Hiram No. 40
From the Master
The Teestleboard is taking an im
portant part in the Masonic life of
Raleigh, it has been the means of creat
ing renewed interest in Masonic affairs,
and a notable increase in attendance at
our meetings.
I earnestly request that any brother
who knows anything that would he of
interest to the craft send it to our cor
respondent Bro. J. T. Mitchell, 217 North
Bloodworth street, on or before the 8th
of each month, as all matter must be in
the printer’s hands by the 10th. We are
depending on you for the news. One
man cannot cover the entire membership
of our Lodge, and I ask that you render
any assistance possible in making Hiram
news of interest to its members.
Schedule of Work
April 15th—Stated ;.Third Degree
May 6th—Stated Second Degree
It has not been the practice in Hiram
Lodge to confer the third degree on regu
lar meeting nights during the summer
months, but owing to the fact that Fel-
lowcraft Bro. W. G. Jones is being trans
ferred to another city effective the 16th
and being desirous of receiving his work
here we have decided to confer the 3rd
degree on him at our stated meeting of
April 15th.
What’s Going On
The Secretary got his wires crossed and
advertised entertainment and refresh
ments at our meeting of March 18th, his
April fool joke was a little early. This
meeting was well attended; the Secretary
knows how to get them out.
The W. M. reported a visit to a dis
trict meeting in Durham at which there
were about 300 present, including the
Grand Master and other notables. Sev
eral important and interesting talks were
made and refreshments served. “A real
Masonic gathering.” Lets have such a
meeting here sometime this year. What
say?
We were pleased to have Avith irs at
our meeting of the 18th Bro. Thos. W.

From the Master
The hot months of summer will soon be
here and there is a decided tendency to
stay at home and cool off; or take a ride
with the family or friends and to forsake
the Lodge. Our meetings will commence
at eight o’clock and we assure you that
we will discharge our duties as fast as
consistent and you Avill not be detained
any longer than necessary. At the regu
lar meeting, and without degree work,
Ave should not detain you longer than a
hour, if degree Avork is in order, two
hours Avill coA^er the meeting. For the
purpose of conferring the 3rd degree, the
Lodge holds special communications
Avhieh be^in at 7 o’clock and in many
instances the candidates for this degree
are preA’iously examined that the Avork
may begin AVithoiit delay and the brethren
alloAved to go home sooner than has been
the usual custom. The officers hope.
Brethren, that you AArill consider these
things and give them the pleasure of your
attendance.
Schedule of Work
April 22nd Second Degree
May 13th First Degree
As we go to press it may be of interest
to state that the first degree is scheduled
for April 8th and on Wednesday the 10th,
three candidates are scheduled for their
third degree.
What’s Going On
There Avas an unusual large attendance
at the March 11th meeting. ScA'cral of the
Brethren saAv fit to make short talks on
matters of interest to the Lodge. At this
meeting it was called to the attention of
the Lodge that the 1928 committee were
considering plans for the annual banquet.
The Master announced the first degree
w’ould be conferred and Alessrs. J. J. Hill
and N. G. Berry were introduced and
initiated E. A., with Bro. John W. Flem
ing, J. W., in the East, who also delivered
the lecture.
The Alarch 25th meeting was honored
by a large number of visitors and at
which time Brothers Tharrington, Berry

Schedule of Work
April 19—Stated Business
May 3-—Stated 3rd Practice, Business
Before The Teestleboard goes to press
we were unable to be sure of our program
for the night of the 19th but it is our
plan to have an interesting meeting of an
educational nature but no deep stuff this
time. On May 3rd Ave Avill follow out
our program of practice meetings for the
officers to learn the station ahead of them
and Brother Bingham, Senior Warden,
Avill occupy the East in the exemplifi
cation of the 3rd degree. Help him out
by being there to see hoAv he does it his
first time. There are few more meeting
nights before the end of our Masonic year
and our attendance average is not up to
normal. Help boost it for the rest of the
time.
What’s Going On
March 15th Avas given over entirely to
business but, as usual, something de
veloped to make it an interesting meeting
from other angles. At the outset it looked
like just another meeting, but before clos
ing it develo])ed into something above the
ordinary. The talk, though, in our meet
ings is too limited. Don’t leave it to a
fcAv to rAin the Lodge. Have your right
ful voice in it. Get used to it, get up and
say something. The only way Ave can
remain at the top as a Lodge is by the
effort of every member to help run it.^
Get into the Avork, too. On the 5th of
April, after the usual business session,
Avhich was a rather lively one. Brother
Overstreet, Senior Deacon, Avas called to
the East and given an opportunity to
demonstrate his ability to confer the first
degree and, believe me, he did that very
thing. He called Bro. C. D. Barbee,
P. M., to the West; Bro. J. W. Kellog,
P. AI., to the South; Brother Parham,
J. W., as S. D.; Brother Bingham, S. W.,
as J. I).; Brothers Cox and Alorris as
SteAvards and proceeded to exemplify the
work of the degree in masterly form. Sec
ond only to the Avork of Overstreet in the
East Avas that of Past Alasters Barbee
and Kellogg who were called on to serve
