We have been reading Miss Peep’s
Diary. V/hen we read so many in
teresting accounts about her
years in Montreat, we thought you
might be interested also.
HISTORY OP THE SUH DIAL
(Prom the diary)
June, 1924—This day the Sun Dial
had 'its" Tfrst publication, a
journal of two sheets. It has
three pictures: Montreat Gate,
the students and faculty to
gether, and Anderson Auditorium.
The Alma Mater, written by Hiss
Lucille Belk to the tune of "Be
lieve Me if All Those Endearing '
Yo-ung Charms", is published for
the first time. The first ac
count of the organization of the
Tritonian and Phllalethian liter
ary societies is one of the news
items.
January 21, 1924--11 P.M. This
fatal da^ About 8:30 this A.M.
Montreat Hotel, used as school
dormitory taken fire in the very
top, and there burned till it
fell down. Paculty and students
turned out into the snow. Kind
neighbors came to rescue, and
we all have shelter tonight.
Principal announced at supper
that school' v/ill continue as
usual, tomorrow. No books. How
continue?
Sept. 1925--Alba Hotel becomes
‘the dormitory.
May 30, 1927--Tenth anniversary
o‘f tHe school celebrated by a
Sun Dial in a light blue paper
back, printed in gold letters.
On the first page appears:
"The Sun-Dial"

But from a golden sky.

This Sun Dial to Dr. and Mrs.

Normal School was founded in 1916
by Dr, R.C. Anderson, There is a
record of two graduates in 1918
from the Normal Department, In
1920 for the first time, a house
keeper v;as put in charge of do
mestic affdirs, Por six years the
Montreat Hotel served as the only
school building. Vflien Anderson
Auditorium was completed in 1922,
classes were transferred to the
chapel' and classrooms_ there."
