key notes by Joan Conner Thabans Announce Play- On May 14 and May 21, the Thalians will present a three-act play, entitled “Father’s Been to Mars.” The play will be held in Anderson Chapel at 8:00, and is under the direction of Miss Evelyn Morris. Principles are Jean Falls, as Mildred Gibson, the harassed wife; Lee Kyle, as Larry Gibson, the eccentric father; Betty Ray, as Eartha, the “maid”; Hope Metz, as Gloria, the long-suffering older daugh ter; Ann Johnson, the the space-happy younger daughter. Corky; and Nancey Gos- uell—Countess Vilma—^who defies descrip tion. Guy Concert How many times have you heard “We never get to hear Mr. and Mrs. Guy sing any more”? Well, for all of those who have missed them (and that includes every body) they are giving a concert—and what better time than May Day? The concert will be held at 8 p.m. in Gaither Chapel. In the program will be included several selections by Dr. Benjmain Dunford—this IS another reason why no one will want to miss it—after all, when a program consists of both Guys and Dunford, how can it miss ? Recital Review They say good things always come in threes. Well, after the last three recitals, I am inclined to believe it whole-heartedly. First on April 14, we had the duo-recital of Miss Noel Morse, organist, and Miss Martha Robinson, pianist. If I were to be asked to select the one work which Miss Robinson performed that impressed me the most, I think that I should he compelled to choose the MacDowell Con certo No. 2. This, in my estimation, gave her a chance to really exhibit her talents to the utmost. Miss Morse’s Karg-Elert Chorale Fantasy seemed to be the high note of her part of the program, although this was hard to determine as she played all with such ex cellence. But, since I have the privilege of being as prejudiced as I like (at least here), this is my choice. (And from what I’ve heard, the choice of many.) On Monday, April 20, Miss Ann Cox, pianist, presented her Senior recital. Miss Cox’s entire program was one that I am sure we will not forget. I doubt that few would ai'gue with me if I said that her Brahms Ballade in D Minor, was played with the understanding and intensity that only comes to a true artist. CAMPUS PERSONALITY Evelyn Morris, from Student to Dean by Jean Falls One of the busiest people on this campus is our Freshman class sponsor, Miss Evelyn Morris. Perhaps that is why she came to be known as “Breezy”. We might add that she has earned her name. Breezy is from those windy West Virginia hills. Her home is in Montgomery. She graduated from Montreat, having majored in Bible and Christian Education. She attended graduate school at Syracuse University and received her Master’s degree in Student Personnel, which includes such work as counseling, residence counseling, psychology, etc. As long as Miss Morris has been in Montreat, she has breezed about actively. While a student here, she held among others such offices as house president and stu dent body president. Since 1955 she has worked here in the summer. Last year, after having completed her graduate work at Syracuse, Miss Morris returned to Montreat College as Assistant Dean of Students, which means many things to many people. To the station wagon drivers, she is custodian of the keys; to the Socialites, she is the calendar keeper; and to all students, she is just about anything from counselor to room clerk. Besides being Freshman class sponsor and faculty advisor to the Thal ians, she teaches two courses. General Psychology and Counseling. Outside her school interests. Miss Morris says she likes to travel, but doesn’t have much of an opportunity to; and likes to read, but doesn’t have much time for this either. Her most recent trip was in March, when she attended a conference for Deans of Women in Cleveland, Ohio. It must have been quite an experience. She says there were eight hundred women of all sizes and shapes and they made as much noise as they do here at the Woman’s Conference! Miss Morris will assume the position of Dean of Students beginning next year. We know that she is taking on a tremendous job at this vital time in the life of Mon treat College. She says it frightens her a little to think about it, but she looks upon it as a challenge and an opportunity for service. She is very optimistic about our junior college situation. She was disappointed, as was everyone, that the decision had to be made, but feels that we must face the fact that we can’t go on trying to be something we’re not. “After all,” she says, “I’d rather go to a junior college in Mon treal than one in Lower Slobovia!” Seriously, she added that Montreal has wonder ful students, tliat excellent choices have been made in the elections of major officers, and that with the co-operation of all she feels sure we can make Montreal a good junior college. Her sparkling personality and her enthusiasm combined with her ability, her confidence in the students, and her faith that all will turn out well, make those of us who are leaving Montreal (and those who are returning) feel sure that our school is in the best of hands. STUDENT OFFICERS ELECTED— From Page 1 news for the Okaloosa News Journal. She is a member of the First Presbyterian Church in Crestview. Linda is majoring in Christian Education, and she is also interested in art, writing. and dramatics. She was art editor for her high school yearbook and an officer in the dramatics club. For the freshman talent show at Montreal, she was greatly responsi ble for the painting of the stage set. She is also active in the Thalians, Los Amigos, and C.C.U.N. One of Linda’s major duties next year will be to act as temporary pres ident of the freshman class. APRIL, 1959
