Coopera tion is needed almost desper- ^ely to improve Montreat-An- '^Orson College. You as stu- '^ents realize quite clearly the improvements and alter ations needed. During the e- 'oction campaign :speeche§, tany promises and vows are "'ade, while at the same time toch of the student body agrees b'hole-heartedly and often gets Yory ambitious and desirous 'Or these promises. Let us Dot forget these words and thoughts for reform and im- P'^ovement as if they were "sever ^9id or blew away like a passing Y^im. , We as students want changes ^0 the college handbook. We Y'ant to express opinions more Dpenly and have a larger hand 'P nnr choice of represent- our bti ves such as the Honor Court We want fewer restrictions, fewer ancient belief hangove:^ more privileges granted to those of college age, mn. -'i- cial eventsj more athl-tic programs, and most of al to be treated more like young adults and colbge students instead of grammar school children- Now, once again, here is where we as students enter in to the picturec In order to gain these wants, responsi bility is mandatory0 Do we have responsibility plus an adult attitude? Up to now it appears that these good traits are dormant,. If we want our desires we must earn them. Look around you at intervals during the day. You see lack of maturity, absent mindedness, lack of trust in a fellovj stu dent, niimerous rumors con sisting of greatly exaggerated material with no confirmation or basis in concrete facts, lack of school spirit, a groin ing amount of small thefts, petty vandalism, plus many other harmful and noticeable characteristics. We are all guilty of some minor charge which is detrimental to our wants. We w a n t changes—we must change, and our desires will begin to be granted Justice must have an equally balanced weight in each hand or citizens cannot have a leg; to stand upon. When our nation was young, Thomas Paine began a literary series ofdemands, reforms, and ideas advocating independence which had great influence upon the American people and their feelings towards British dornH ination. We are by no means under such suppression anddom* *^ if- * I ination as were our ibrefalhsrs, but we do want certain condi tions whicn are fitting for college students. Like the supporters of Paines' Common Sense, we, if we stic) together, and push harder, and improve ourselves, can soon see a steady incline pointing to our ultimate goals. It is as simple and concrete as this? we want a college, not a mid- Victorian finishing school. Do NOT by-pass this, articleo Support your representatives. Give them that much, and make them support you. Push those petitions through and they will be noticed, A learned man made a state ment recently during chapel hour which struck many of us: "Tn high school we are given external discipling. In col lege we are given and culti vate internal discipline.
