RALPH BELL "Every person ought to have a chance to make a decision about Christ. He didn't leave it hanging. We must make a choice." So spoke Reverend Ralph Bell when asked why he gave Montreat-Anderson students a chance to make the choice, a practice of Dr. Billy Graham's. And Ralph Bell is a member of the Billy Graham Association. It's a job that keeps him on the road 9-10 months each year. His last stop before speaking here November I was Rochester, New York. While there, he was asked to speak on "what it's like being a Negro in America." For this subject, he felt he needed a receptive audience. He stated, "I didn't want to unbare my soul and have it fall on deaf ears." Ralph Bell also speaks in the ghettos and to black militants. Do they listen? Yes, he says he has seen some young men, on the verge of militancy, accept Christ. He tells them, "You're wrong, it's not a white man's gospel. Christ knew the sting of prejudice and race hatred." Where, we asked, has the established church failed in communicating the Gospel to large segments of our society? "They're not speaking to the gut issues. The church needs to relate more to people and their needs." What can individual Christians do to further understanding? Ralph Bell replied, "We have to demonstrate it's not a counterfeit Gospel." Other than this, what can Montreat -Anderson students do towards race relations? Reverend Bell answered, "There needs to he a genuine, warm acceptance of each person just because he is an individual." Hughes McAlister Gymnasium 669-9191 9weak blues by John Ulmer With the nine week grading period drawing to a close, the Montreat student sees visions of finally getting something for his mailbox. Yes, it's time again for those official little white pieces of paper. They tell you that you're completely below average. In addition, you realize that the all night "coke" parties definitely must be reduced to only three times a week. The Montreat student wades hip deep through piles of warning slips which decorate the post office floor. You either rejoice or heap curses on your professors. Yes, this is the climactic moment when you discover if your professor really does know your name and whether that one stupid quiz counts for all of the nine weeks. If you can hold out till the heat's off, you can once again go home weekends. Of course, waiting is easy compared to the long nights of study while swearing that this Is the way it is going to be for the rest of the semester. This delirium runs about a week before it wears off. The best solution to the really very simple problem is just don't put a foot In the post office or answer the telephone. At the other end could be an irate parent. If this doesn't work, you can always make the time honored plea "There must be come mistake!"
