Page 2 September. 1977 Editorial CONVOCATION POLICY When the student Goverment made the motion to have a committee go see Dean Evans in their meeting Sept. 5th, it was their goal for “General Studies required attendances and grading system from last year be continued and the present system be discontinued! (Quote taken form minutes recorded by Margaret Bender:, Secretary 9-5) Yet according to SGA President Rex Hoffman the committee and Dean Evans came to a deadlock, and thus a compromise was made. The compromise being that required attendances be cut from 30 to 26 for a letter grade A. In convocation Monday the j:l2th , Dean Evans announced that the compromise was a drop from 30 to 27, not the previously agreed upon number of 26! Only after the SGA conlftonted Evans, a second time did he agree to the number 26. Now for an examination of Dean Evans considerations leading to the decision to instuitute letter grades listed for the reader on page one of this issue. No. 1-While General Studies is a credit course here at MAC, it is not a'transferable credit.' Other colleges will look at our grade point average af fected by General Studies, but not accept the G. S. credit. No. 2-Every student I’ve talked to coidd care less if someone got the same grade they received by going to Convocationlor Chapel a less number of times. Students want to go to hear the announcements, speakers, and other entertainment, not to get a grade. No. 3-Why should an honor student demonstrate superior performance in this course as well as others when G. S. will not transfer? It is because the other subjects transfer that the students seek to excell in them. No. 4-Okay, it will help the A.E. students, but let’s remember that they are a very small minority. As in any democratic system majority rules! It is agreed that it will not do much injustice to students who excell academically. Maybe an eithth on a point could be lost. As for number 5-WE ARE NOT NUMEROUS OTHER COLLEGES. We are different. PTL. Let’s prove it. I suggest that Dean Evan’s new system is merely a tool in prodding more students out of their rooms and into Convocation and Chapel. Improve the quality of the speakers and the entertainment and students will attend 27 or more times. 'Thatis just an added suggestion. The overwhelming desire from the student body is for the new system to be dropped irifa'vorlof the old.jOut of 1(X) persons petitioned this week 1(X) were not satisfied with the new policy and favored the old. . „ What Happened to the S.U.? Backtalk Some of MAC’s students were asked their opinion on the elimination of long Tuesday- 'Thursday classes. Here are some of their comments: “I like the shorter class hour as I am able to pay much better at tention. A negative point might be that it is harder to plan your schedule.’ Sandy Edmisten “Fifty-minute class periods seem to work out better. Attention is greater and everyone doesn’t go to sleep.’ Bill Bunn “Tuesday-'Thursday classes were alright because it gave the student a break with only two class meetings a week.’ Jerry McPeters “I do not really/care,for this new schedule. It’s impossible to read a novel in three nights! ’ Kaye Beasley “I like the new system better than the hour and a quarter classes over 2 days. I think it i\si MORE ORGANIZED.” Carrie Wolfenden. “The old system was much more orderly. Many classes are missed due to misunderstandings about our schedules. We end up using all our class cuts just trying to learn our schedules.’Barbara Lemmert “. . .1 tend to like the old system better because it was more organized and I enjoyed the con sistency of the class schedules and getting out at the same time on certain days.’ Ben Fortson “I am relieved that this year I won’ t be falling asleep on Tuesday and Thursday.’ Chad Kapfhamer . “The new schedule seems to be chatotic now, however, maybe later things will become more organized. Personally, I am fighting to get used to it.’ Leslie Lehr “I’m really glad that we don’t have the long Tuesday-Thursday classes, but its going to take awhile,to'get adjusted to this schedule since it’s so different.’ Beth Johnson “.. .1 would like to have more time in class to talk to the teachers.’ Beth Long “The classes seem to fit a lot of people’s idea of decent class length. I am happy that I don’t have to be “trapped’in the same room for so long.’ John Kiricoples “I appreciate the new schedule, for all the classes have the same allotted time span.’ Bryan Cun ningham Write As everyone probably knows, the student union is closed this year. For those of you who ask why, you do deserve an explanation. First of all, the college does not own the building by Lake Susan in which the student union is situated, but rents it from the Montreat Association,- Inc. This year the college has regretfully decided ' not to rent this building. At the i moment, plans are being made by Mrs. Andrews to open the gym as a game room to com pensate for the closing of the student union. Details as to what the hours will be or what the game room will consist of are indefintite at the present time, but will be announced in the near future. The newspaper staff would greatly appreciate it if you, the students, would let us know your opinions on this matter by writing a letter to the editor of the newspaper.
