) Women’s Football by Allen Meadows Thursday afternoon, November 10, provided a cold, windy football fiasco at the Dust Bowl between the Women’ s Intramural Football Champions 5th Floor MA Hall and 3rd floor MA Hall. The game proved to be as cold and conservative as the weather for neither team could produce points during regulation time. Fifth floor finally pulled out a last- second victory in a five minute overtime 6-0. From the opening kickoff and following it was clearly a defensive battle. Beth Johnson, Martha Webb, Kaye Beasley, and Mary Brittain contributed primarily to 3rd floor’s ‘brickwair defense which stopped the opposition on several occasions only feet from scoring. The entire 5th floor team was a factor in stopping 3rd’s potent attack quar terbacked by Martha Webb. In the five minute overtime period 3rd floor won the toss and elected to receive. After a fair return of the kickoff 3rd floor was stimied on their first down, but not for long. The second play was a left end sweep which the team calls their “70 Drag- in! It brought the ball down to about the 20-yard line, but from there on it was all 5th floor as 3rd floor turned the ball over on downs. Patty Colcord, who had taken over the quarterback position following an inpry to regular Bea Burton after the first half, took the ball from center and drove down to the 5-yard line behind strong blocking from team mates. The next play stalled and surprisingly 3rd floor called an untimely time-out with approximately 50 seconds to play to do what they later phrased “to reorganize! This costly mistake gave 5th floor more time left to score, and after the third down failed to advance the ball, on fourth Patty Colcord again took the ball going off right guard to score. This winning play was called by Coach Robert Hunt’s assistant Mitchell Case. Art Austine coached the defeated 3rd floor team. There was a little controversy over whether Colcord scored on the last second play. Kaye Beasley of the opposition claimed to have removed the flag before she scored. Referees Jeff Weaver and Kenny Roseboro did not change their decision and .awarded 5th floor the game. Please see letter to the editor on page 2. Soccer The Valley United Soccer Club held its first meeting on Saturday, the 12 of November. Twenty people showed up from MAC, Owen High School, and the surrounding area to provide a good turnout. A pick-up game was possible and consisted of two halves, each of which were forty minutes long. This was more than enough time to tire everyone and no one was injured. If participation and interest is evident in the future, then a char tered club will be established. Several clubs from Asheville, Brevard, Marion, Morganton, and Hickory are available for com petition. Sounds inviting doesn’t it? The next meeting will be held at Rockmont promptly at 12:45 on Sunday, November the 19th. Bring your own cleats and a friend. The outcome was a 34-18 victory for Davis. game was still close with a score of 21-18 but Davis got two quick touch downs to put it away. According to team member Robert Hunt, Davis w'on because they played like a team. “Everybody wanted to win.” Team captain Mitchell Case stated that the game was won on offense. “The run opened up Mie game to start with and left us open to pass,’he said. Mitchell also said that he thought the game proved that Davis had the best all-around players. Howerton captain Rusty Pulliam stated that their trouble was caused by new players showing up. “Our main problem was that a lot of guys showed up who hadn’t played before and we had to play them|Rusty said. “We weren’t playing our first team. Rusty also stated that he thought Howerton had the most talent but he “had to give them credit for playing like a team!' “The main difference was their practicing and their togetherness!’ he said. “Because of baseball and basketball practice we came out with a different team almost every time. They had the same guys every game.” The main players in the cham pionship game for Davis were Joe Call, Robert Hunt, Bill Wagoner, Mac Bridges, Mitchell Case, John Kiricoples, Joe Peoples, Van Kor- negay, Ivan Diggs, Jeff Weaver and Sandy Yandle.
