Montreal to Receive $27,000 for Road Repairs
by Allen Meadows
The State of North Carolina has
ear-marked $27,235 dollars of its
Federal Funding for the town of
Montreat to repair damages brought
on by the flooding rains back in
November according to Mr. Andy
Andrews of the Mountain Retreat
Association. $21,842 dollars of the
amount will go towards reparing
roads while the remainder will be
spent on parks and-or bridges:
Since the flooding rains, the town
has spent $1800 of their own budget
on repairs. Seventy-five percent of
the funding should arrive in a few
days, and $10,000 of it will be used
immediately within the next 60-90
days, to repair roads ■ 'and culverts
with special emphasis on Assembly
Drive. Full-scale paving of the
roads is expected to begin as soon as
the cold weather breaks.
Montreat had initially asked for
248,000 in funding based on an
estimate composed by Dean Larry
Wilson and a Federal Disaster
Team. The reason according to the
State for the subsequent difference
between the estimate and that
amount given was based on need.
Several other areas in NC needea
disaster funds worse than Montreat.

Buildings Renamed
The Montreat-Anderson College
Board of Trustees recently • voted
unanimously to rename two
buildings in honor of two of the
College’s lifetime friends. The
newly remedied Faculty Office
Building will now be called the
McLeod Building in honor of Mary
Stewart McLeod of Bartow,
Florida and the student lounge of
MaHall Women’s dormitory has
been renamed in honor of Mary
Elizabeth Wilson of Black Mountain.
Mary Stewart McLeod has been a
supporter of the college and
Christian EducationI in North
Carolina for 30 years! President
\Taughn said “we are truly indeb-
tyed to this dedicated and selfless
lady.” Elizabeth Wilson is a strong
supporter of the College and was a
former Dean of Students and faculty
member. She has devotedjmost of
her life in making MAC a school, of
quality education within a Christian
community. “Miss Wilson has
supported this school in just about
everyway imaginable,’’according to
President Vaughn.
The naming of a building in honor
of these two wonderful ladies seems
like nothing in light of their over
flowing dedication to the College.

For the third time in as many
years Nicky Cruz returned to the
MAC campus October 6 and 7 for a
time of feUowship and teaching. The
one time infamous Bronx street-
fighter turned Christian evangelist,
and author of Run Baby Run, drove
in from the West Coast due to a
special invitation from Mrs. Billy
Graham. Needless to say, the
student body was more than ap
preciated for Mrs. Graham’ s
prompting Cruz’ return and
displayed their favor with en-
thsiastic clapping, standing
ovations, and Christian love during
Nicky’s two day visit.
In his talk to the student body in
Chapel, the 7th, Nicky spoke on
“Loneliness’: He said, “I miss my
v/ife, children, and family but that’s
just human feelings. I am talking
about when you feet down to the
bottom line - loneliness from God,
when other things let you down. A
real loneliness when there is no
fellowship. Don’t forget that you’re
very important to God. Don’t worry
about others.” He went on to warn
against trying to escape into the
fantasies of the day such as the Star
Wars craze. It is “nothing but
chasing rainbows!’ He also brought
up how pills, cults, and suicides were
people’ s ways for escaping
loneliness. Nicky Cruz was a big
leader out on the streets, but when
he went to his room - LONELINESS!
Nicky interrupted his very hectic
schedule to be with us because the
last time he was here he saw such
tremendous needs in girls and guys
on campus. Nicky, referring to his
time of fellowship with much of the
student body the night of
December 6th in MaHall lobby,
said “I felt so comfortable! seeing so
many people responding (to the love
of Christ which he was sharing).’
Nicky’s schedule for next year
includes stops throughout the world,
plus several big city ghettos, and
prison work. A unique trip to Russia
in 1979 is in the planning stages too.
He will release another book
sometime next year entitled
Loneliness, and negotiations are now
being made concerning a possible
film based on Run Baby Run.
The Nicky Cruz Organization is
moving its administrative offices
from Raleigh, NC to Colorado
Springs, | Colo. There, a training
center will be set up for “young
people feeling a call to this type of
work.” Other branches of this center
will be set up around the nation.
