Department. This year there are 51 students in the class and two buses are required to haul them twice a week to the Catalooche slopes for their six scheduled lessons. This year the class has had some problems getting going. They have not been able to meet twice this term due to bad road conditions on one occasion and the slopes were closed for making snow on another. When the class did make it to the slopes they experienced some more bad weather conditions such as light rain and driving winds. But in spite of these com plications those in the class are still enthusiastic about it. Acourding to Vic'Goumas the class has been worth it despite its slow start: “I really like the class because I’ve gotten great instruction and then I’ve had time to go out on my own to practice what I’ve learned.” Joe Call also emphasized]the good teaching the class has to offer: “I wouldn’t recommend taking the class to anyone that’ s past the intermediate level since the beginner and in termediate slopes are the only slopes open during the class, but I think it’s great for those who are beginning since the instructiors give such good individual instruction.” If the weather stays as cold as it has been the last week the I class should not have any [ more problems with rain or bad conditions on the slopes; if so, those in the class should have a great introduction to an exciting winter sport. Photo by Hugh Belcher ‘Coach Of I The Week’ Basketball Coach Norm Wilhelmi received Coach of the Week honors by the Asheville Times for playing a major role in the turn-around of the basketball program here at Montreat-Anderson College. Wilhelmi came out of retirement to take over the coaching duties this season. He came to MAC in 1974 after coaching at the King’s College in New York for 19 years. As most of you know, he has taught recreation and physical education, and has also acted as Soccer Coach and Coordinator for two years prior to being called upon to become basketball coach. Wilhelmi cited two things exemplifying his philosophy and the team’s early success: “I don’t think anybody should come to college to play basketball. They should come to learn first and then play basketball. The game of basketball can be a learning experience and I try to stress this to the kids. We have a good bunch of boys, nobody is selfish.” Robert Brinkley (33) blast off to defend an early MAC lead as Alva Duke (41) looks on. Men’s Basketball Grows Awesome MAC roundball enthusiasts returned to school following Christmas break to see the Cavaliers down Asheville- Buncombe Tech 86-68 on January 18. The outcome was never in doubt as the MAC attack built up a 34-27 halftime lead. The margin was stretched to a 17 point lead, 74-57 with 11 minutes remaining after Robert Brinkley sunk 2 shots from the charity stripe. Seconds later James Freshwater fouled out wito 18 points exemplifying the way in which the referees were palling the game. Fans were wondering why Willie McCray wasn’t called for a technical for excessive sweating: the referees had called everything else! In spite of this, MAC’S record was upped to 6-1. On January 21 the Cavs traveled over to Surry Community College only to see their 5-game winning streak come to a close. Highly ranked Surry upped its record to 11-2 with a 82-76 victory. MAC led at the offset but that was the last as Surry broke loose building up a 42-37 halftime lead. The opposition connected on 12 free throws in the second helf to put the game away as the Cavaliers ran into foul brouble. Willie McCray led MAC 19 points, aided by Freshwater with 17, Brinkley with 14, and Gary Parris had 12. MAC’S next outing was at home against Wilks Community College January 24. Nothing came easy for the Cavs that night as they squeezed out a 66-62 victory. The opponents were hit ting consistantly from outside and had the game tied up at 28-28 seconds before the half. A combination of a full-court press and all-out running with the ball by MAC brough the Cavs a 34-30 advantage as they went into the locker room. Wilks pulled out a 6 point lead with 13 minutes to go before James Freshwater sank a shot following a MAC comeback to make it 47-45. With 11:05 remaining, “6-9”McCray collected his fourth foul seconds before Robert Brinkley committed his third. They were replaced by Kenny Roseboro and Alva Duke. Roseboro put on a one man show (something uncomon for the Cav) for the next several minutes, stealing the ball twice and scoring four points. MAC stalled the game with 3:30 remaining and the xcore 60-58 behind expert dribbling by Fresh. Freshwater came through with 6 free throws in the final minutes of play to ice the game 66- 62. SCORING; Freshwater 22, McCray 12, Brinkley 11, Diggs 12, Parris 5, and Roseboro 4. Women Basketball Experiencing Growing Pains MAC Women’s basketball is still experiencing birth pains. The first-year squad under the direction of Coach Ja3me Issacson has been down trodden by practically every opponent this year with experience being their only gain. But as any fan would be quick to inform you, “they’re learning and getting better!' ’ The girls recorded a winning note on January 18th against Asheville-Buncombe Tech 54-27. It should be noted, however, that only four regular players were present for the opposition with the remainder of their team consisting of cheerleaders. After Carrie Wolfenden lit up the scoreboard on the opening pl'ay, no scoring took place for the next 2 minutes. Finally Cathy Laws connected on several shots before suf fering a leg cramp and was replaced by Arlene Bums. With 11 minutes remaining A-B called time-out. During the brief intermission one referee commented “We’ re going to have to get these girls some points,’ ’ in reference to the A-B team. His partner answered him saying, we’ 11 figure something out.” Fortunately the refs didn’t have to do anything as A-B got on the scoreboard with ten minutes remaining. The game was never in doubt. Cathy Laws led the MAC attack with 25 points.
