A Visit With
The President
By Karen Oglesby
Montreat-Anderson College has
the distinct honor of being
represented by one of the finest men
in the history of the college, Dr. Silas
M. Vaughn, President of our institu
tion. In talking with President
Vaughn, he expressed many things
that you, the student body, should
know and be interested in.
Perhaps some of you are wonder
ing what it is like to be the president
of a coliege. I know I was. President
Vaughn wili tell you that as far as his
relationship is with the administra
tion, facuity, and the students here at
Montreat, he feels like he is loved as
an individual and that his position
here is respected. Dr. Vaughn highly
commends the student leaders as
those who are upholding the
phiiosophy of the coilege. This, of
course, is a support to him, as he can
be confident in representing
Montreat-Anderson.
The president made a statement
which I feel says a lot for the ad
ministration and faculty that he
works with. He said, “This is the
most pieasant job I have ever had.”
Vaughn stated that he was very pro
ud of the college as a whole which
made his job very enjoyable.
Dr. Vaughn’s job entails many
duties, one of which is fund-raising.
His concentration on this area pro
vides our college with money that is
necessary for its livelihood. Dr.
Vaughn shared with me that students
are the best fund-raisers and
recruiters we have. The students
become our public image and public
relations people, for they are the
ones who have a story to tell about
Montreat-Anderson College. For ex
ample, Dr. Vaughn mentioned one in
stance when a friend of his sat with
students during our Thanksgiving
meal here at school and the next day
this friend came to his office with a
$25,000 check. This was a resuit of
his conversation with the students at
his dinner table. He was impressed
with the high caliber of students that
were attending Montreat-Anderson
College and he wanted to provide tor
more like them.
Another responsibility President
Vaughn has is to the school’s Board
of Trustees. This group of men and
women play a vital role in the well
being of our schooi. He comments
on these men and women, “They are
without exception, committed to the
philosophy of our institution and pro
viding it with sound educational and
knowledgeable faculty and staff.”
The board Is interested In all
aspects of the college. President
Vaughn provides them with such
statistics as how many students are
receiving aid, where continuing
students transfer, the teaching loads
of the teachers, and even dorm life.
They want to know everything. You’ll
find members of the board mingling
with the students at meals when they
are here in Montreat. They are truly
concerned with the students, which
President Vaughn appreciates in
these individuals, who are dedicated
to good, sound educational manage
ment.
In conclusion. President Vaughn
said he is proud of the present
classes as he always has been of
those he has been associated with in
the past. Optimistic is the word Dr.
Vaughn used to describe his feelings
about the upcoming year. As we end
ed the interview. President Vaughn
said he had one request to make of
all the students and families, “I
would like that we pray for each other
and the work that we are seeking to
do here, in order that we may all more
fully glorify God.”

What’s blue and yellow, cute, pep
py, and cheers for their team in glory
to God? Right! Montreat-Anderson’s
1981-’82 cheerleaders! What does
flips, has a deep voice and belongs to
the same family as the cheerleaders?
Right again! Montreat-Anderson’s
SGA Leader
Suggests
Involvement
By Marcia West
I’m sure that all of you have been
wondering about our good-looking
President of the Student Government
Association. Weil, sit back and
relax...let me introduce you to Jeff
Lewis.
Jeff is twenty years old and is from
Avondale Estates, Georgia. He
transferred to Montreat-Anderson
College last January after attending
Georgia Southern. “Just as most of
you have realized, in order to really
enjoy yourself at any college, you
must get involved. What you put in to
school is what you’ll get out of
school,” says Jeff.
Being president of SGA is a big
responsibility, but Jeff is ready and
willing for whatever lies ahead, he’s
just representing YOU and the col
lege. He stresses that he wants to do
everything prayerfully and in a way in
which the kinds of activities spon
sored reach all kinds of people.
As a student of Montreat-Anderson
College, you have a voice in Student
Government. Every activity or club
that is on campus has had to go
through Student Government, so
bring your ideas and thoughts to the
SGA meetings. They are held on the
first and third Monday nights of each
month at 6:15. Also, Jeff stresses to
get involved in the Student Activities
meetings which meet at 4:00 every
Monday afternoon.
The scripture that SGA has taken
as their theme for this 1981-82 school
year is Hebrews 12:1-2:
"Let us lay aside every en
cumbrance, and the sin
which so easily entangles
us, and let us run with en
durance the race that is
set before us, fixing our
eyes on Jesus, the author
and perfector of faith,
who for the joy set before
Him endured sat down at
the right hand of the
throne of God. ”
After Jeff shared with me this
scripture, he turned in his personal
inspirational thoughts book and ask
ed me to share with you these words
of inspiration:
"When you can do nothing, Christ
can do everything." The SGA wants
Christ to do everything on this cam
pus, but the field of labor can always
hold more. “Come and get involved-
we need you.”
1981-’82 stuntmen!
•Starting this year off right, the
stuntmen have already joined the
cheerleaders this soccer season for
some home games. Laura Bass,
head cheerleader this year from
Tucker, Georgia, who also cheered on
the squad last year, says that we real
ly need “some excited, spirited
crowds” this year. Everyone should
come out, support their team, and
help the cheerleaders out with their
enthusiasm and patriotism. Laura is
really pleased with the squad this
year; she says the Lord has really
blessed us with a good squad. The
girls pick up on their cheers very easi
ly. They get along well - like one big
family - stuntmen and cheerleaders
alike! “The Lord is there with us,”
says Laura. “We’re not out there
cheering for ourselves or for our own
glory. We’re out there for the Lord, to
glorify Him...” as well as to help out
the team and get the crowd excited.
Advising the squad this year are
Julia Roberts and Mrs. A. This
talented group of spirit-boosters con
sist of: Head cheerleader • Laura
Bass; Co-head - Kim Switzer from
Sarasota, Florida; Karen Bass from
Mebane, N.C.; Vickie Cromwell from
Connelly Springs, N.C.; Dona
DePriest from Miami, Florida; Alter
nate - Amy Garrett from Titusville,
Pennsylvania: and Alternate - Eve
Geer from Thomasville, Georgia;
Head stuntman - Don Bush from
Amherst, Virginia; Robert Elliott;
Chris Gyorgy from Sarasota, Florida;
Scott Haley from Asheville, N.C.;
John Murphy from New Orleans,
Louisiana; Mike Stark from Hun
tington, West Virginia; and Bobby
Turner from Charlotte, N.C.
The cheerleaders and stuntmen
are all talented add most have had
previous experience before in
cheerleading or gymnastics. This is a
squad to be proud of, and with the
Lord on their side, how can we lose?!
