Page 2 Genuine or Phony? Jay Guffey At one time in our iives, we have ail taken a stand on a particular issue. We may have backed our point up very strongly or we may have been phony about the issue from the start. What was that? Did I say “phony”? Yes. I said phony. A phony person is one who is all “show” and no “go.” Probably the most often accused phonies, or hypocrites, are the people in the church. You might hear the statement, “Those church people are, not for real, they’re fake.” Another familiar statement would be, “There is nothing but hypocrites in the church.” These feelings might be false but many times they are unfortunately true. As Christians, we need to ask ourselves,” Are we genuine or phony?” Most of us will probably answer the question with “genuine,” but let’s look at the issue closer. We may believe that there is only one God, but is that enough? No, it is not. In the new Testament, James writes to us saying, “You believe that God is one. You do well; the demons also believe, and shudder. But are you willing to recognize, you foolish fellow, that faith without works is useless?” (James 2: 9-20) Hold me Jolyn Peyton Kendrick Just hold me forever and never let me go. I struggle with the feelings that I wish that I could show. My words have no meaning and my actions are weak, trying to share my heart with you with words I can not speak. The Next Choice George Stewart Now that the hoop-la of the debates is over it is now time to return to other aspects of the issues that are involved. What comes to my mind is the question of who America wants in office when it’s time to replace our Supreme Court Justices. The average age of the majority of the Justices is or is nearing 70 years old. This means that the next ad ministration will be in charge of picking new ones to fill the seats that will undoubtedly be vacated soon. This job should go to Presi dent Reagan because of his already proven ability to choose Justices well. This can be seen with his choice of America’s first Woman Justice. The reason this opportunity should not be given to Walter Mondale is simple just look at who he chose to run as V.P.... James is talking about action. Our belief in God has to be associated with actions. In understanding that actions are a part of our Christianity, we must also realize that our actions should be in God’s will and not our own. We have to give Him full authority and then pray for His guidance to help us know what is right. Although our actions for God will differ from one another, we all start at the same point. That is ac cepting Christ’s plea to “FOLLOW ME, and I will make you fishers of men” (Mark 1:17). If we have given our Lord full authority over our lives and are following Him, then there will be no question as to our genuiness. We will not be looked upon as phony. Our Christian lives could be compared to a new pair of shoes; they’re not just for putting on and showing, but for getting up and going. Who Ya Gonna Vote For? Reagan! Kathy Russell After watching the debates and doing some research, the only logical choice for President is Reagan. The Republicans plat form and Reagan’s philosophy are parallel to my own ideas as well as the majority of students polled. President Reagan strongly de nounces abortion, for he clearly sees abortion as the slaughter of helpless babies. I cannot even perceive the ignorance of those who claim that abortion is “just the disposing of some tissue.” President Reagan also promotes voluntary prayer in schools. Note, I said voluntary. Contrary to the popular misconception, Reagan wants freedom of all religions, not a mandatory prayer but a time of voluntary prayer for each child to worship whomever he pleases. whether it be Alla, Buddha, or God. The Republican platform calls for a strong defense. And I firmly believe in the axiom “peace through strength.” President Reagan is a man devoted to the cause of peace, but he is not weak. He is not afraid to stand for his beliefs. Other nations know that America is not a doormat but a country who defends its way of life. The platform is against the Equal Rights Amendment itself but supports equality for women. I sincerely believe that these past four years have been a time of economic prosperity. After viewing the issues Reagan is not just the logical choice but the only choice for the next four years. Walter Mondale: Life Cycle The LogIcal Choice Jolyn Peyton Kendrick From a seed grows a stem reaching up as a repentant sinner towards the heavens. A bud forms on this stem. The flower grows and blossoms as a child does from birth. The fragrance is sensational like that of a rose. It is as soft to the touch as the stem moves with the wind and begins to bend. The petals fall as snowflakes softly to the ground. All that is left is the end as it was in the beginning. Rain Storm Jolyn Peyton Kendrick The air is wet and clinging there is no breeze. There are no birds singing only the sound of a violent sea. The clouds form their convention making mountains in the sky. They rumble with a growing tension the sound is like a sigh. Satie fills the air around and the winds begin to rise. The sea continues its crashing sound as the rain falls from the sky. Juli Holladay Ronald Reagan is obviously favored on campus to win another term, but let’s examine the only logical choice, Walter Mo'ndale. The issues speak for themselves. The defense budget is a big con cern. I agree our country should be protected, but the arms race is get ting out of hand. Who cares if the Russjans have more atomic bombs than we do? We already have enough to destroy the entire earth many times over. Why build more? I’ll be the first to admit that I am furious over U.S. involvement in Central America. Reagan sent troops to “save” the students in Grenada when they didn’t need to be saved. I disagree with having troops in Lebannon also. I honest ly believe Reagan wants a war. The religious issue is one of my main concerns. I don’t believe prayer belongs in public schools. This county was founded on the basis of freedom of religion. Hav ing mandatory prayer in classrooms may violate some people’s beliefs. Not every child in every classroom will be Christian. The Jewish children may be of fended. Another reason I don’t agree with prayer in school is that I believe prayer should be a private experience. It must be meaningful. When a teacher says, “Okay students, we have to pray now,” it doesn’t mean a thing to the children. Prayer should be volun tary. I would cast my vote for Walter Mondale because I want to live to have children and see them grow- up. I want our country to be respected. Other countries don’t agree with our involvement in El Salvador. I want my children to be free to praise God in their own way. Don’t get me wrong, I don’t dislike Ronald Reagan. I think “Bedtime for Bonzo” is a classic. Her suggested links to organiz ed crime send shivers down one’s spine to imagine the possibility of having her type occupy a seat as a Supreme Court Judge-a lifetime appointment.
