BIRTHPLACE
AND THE HARD ROCK CAFE
by Mindy Cllnard
While herds of college students hit
the beaches, while many bummed
around home visiting old friends and
spending money, and while some
illustrious students even earned extra
cash; one group of Montreat students
went on Spring Break, English-style.
Rebecca Burke, John Smith, Alice
Harding, Lou Johnson, Amanda Bailey,
Elaine Weidman, and Dr. Don King
crossed the Atlantic on a "purely
educational” tour of England. They were
treated to a five night stay in London,
one night in Coventry (complete with
squash courts and snooker tables) and
one night in Bristol.
Traveling with two groups from
Alabama and one from Mississippi, the
far-from-home Montreatians visited
such places as Windsor Castle,
Shakespeare's Birthplace, Canterbury
Cathedral, Westminister Abby,
Stonehenge, The Tower of London, Big
Ben, Oxford University and of course,
the Hard Rock Cafe of London.
When asked what was the best
aspect of the tour, Amanda Bailey
replied, "Learning about another country
and its heritage ahd culture. It
broadened our horizons." The worst,
“The five hours lost of sleep in the time
change and the lack of sleep while
there."

GREYBEARD
PLAYERS
by Karen Jessee
Anxious playgoers, mostly
students, whispered their excitement
and questions to those sittihg around
them. The stage setting gave clues to
the nature of the Imagined time and
place. Backstage about twenty
students checked their stage make-up a
final time and reluctantly abandoned
their dog-eared scripts. The date was

generating much humor about an ugly
(or not so ugly) princess getting

Much time and effort went into the
performance of these three plays.
Nearly two dozen students spent a
month rehearsing, memorizing lines,
creating effective scenery, finding
needed props, and closet-raiding for the
Ideal costume. This dedication showed
in the production and was appreciated
by the students.
