MONTREAT BASEBALL:
PLAYOFF BOUND? PROBABLY!
by Knox Bridges
1 begin this article with an apology
to the baseball team and Coach Tlnnell.
1 had previously written an early
season report, but I was too late to get
It Into the last Issue of the paper. For
that I am truly sorry, and hope this
article will do the team justice.
It all began with the team winning
8 out of our first 10 games.
. PItcher/shortstop/desIgnated hitter
Charlie Brown began this 10 game run
with 17 RBI's and 3 home runs. Center-
fielder and left-fielder Derek Helton
and David Pressley both got off to .400
batting starts, lillt Flow was named
■pitcher of the Week* after pitching a
shutout and opening the season with a
2-0 record. But that was all In the
beginning.
Now, the team Is 17-19-2. The
season has had It's ups and downs since
the start. First the ups. Leading
hitters Include: David Pressley (.372),
Derek Helton (.345), and Charlie Brown
(.319). Doug Ross and Nell Adams are
also batting above .300. The leading
pitchers Include Wade Bigham (3.75),
Milt Flow (4.22), Charlie Brown (4.50),
and Todd Phillips (5.20). Milt Flow
posts the best record with a 4-1. Joel
McDaniel presently has a shutout and a
1 hitter to his record. Todd Phillips
has a shutout and a 2 hitter to his
record. Todd Phillips Is leading all
pitchers with 32 strikeouts. He Is
averaging about 1 strikeout per Inning.
Defense continues to be led by Nell
Adams, Derek Helton, and Steve Ingle.
Now for the downs. Despite good
pitching and fair defense, the batting
has had a rough time. However, It
appears that since the last 4 games,
the batting Is back on an up-swIng.
David Pressley, Charlie Brown, and
Derek Helton continue to lead the team
In bats, it Is hoped that more hitters
will emerge In the last games to give
Sophomore Jill Baker warming up.
WOMEN'S SOFTBALL

us a good shot at the conference
tournament. Errors have also plagued
the team, but are getting fewer with
each game.
Now a word about Charlie Brown.
Charlie's batting stats are remarkable.
119 times he's been at the plate with
only 6 strike-outs! He, along with
Derek Helton lead the team In hits with
38. Charlie leads the team with 27
RBI's. And, that boy can pitchl In his
last start against Anderson College,
this writer watched him fan batter
after batter. His fastball Is something
to see. If you haven't seen him play, you
don't know what you're missing.
Montreat has only 9 regular season
games remaining. It's time more fans
began attending the games. Sometimes
I feel that except for players
girlfriends (and some who wish they
were) and myself, nobody bothers to go
to the games. Why? Most people are
finished class by the time the team
plays. Most people can at least catch
one game of a double-header. The team
needs more encouragement and I expect
more out of our students than I see.
Are they playoff bound? You bet they,
will be if you show them your support,
See you at the game.
Much athletic talent goes
unnoticed on our campus. The rosters
are rich with outstanding players on all
of our sports teams (soccer, volleyball,
basketball, baseball, and softball).
This year alone, 35 athletic
scholarships were awarded to players
ranging in amounts from $ 100 to $3100.
One all-around lady athlete Is
Sophomore Beverly McGee. While here
at Montreat, Bev has played all three
sports available to women. She plays
this year on an athletic scholarship for
volleyball and has been offered
scholarships at both Catawba and
Greensboro Colleges to play after
leaving Montreat. She Is In the process
of deciding where her future studies
will lead her.
Presently she Is playing outfield
for the softball team. "Everyone gets
along great, ” Bev comments about this
years team. "The freshmen that came
In have really added to the team,
they’re enthusiastic and willing to
learn and take advice from the
returning players. We have good team
work."
The ladles softball team has
worked very hard this semester, after
having begun practice even while
basketball season was still under way
for some of the players. Lou Johnson
has done an excellent Job this year as
coach and friend to the girls even
though their strong efforts have not
been overly successful on the field.
The lady Cavaliers will be playing
at home today at 3:00 against Hlwassee
and will travel to Milligan College on
April 21st for their last game of the
season.
