The Aletheia VOLUME 11 NUMBER 2 MONTREAT-ANDERSON COLLEGE OCTOBER 2. 1987 STEVEN CURTIS CHAPMAN: A POWERFUL VOICE WITH A POWERFUL MESSAGE LINDA DELGADO This past Friday night, September 25th, we were blessed with another spectacular concert. Steven Curtis Chapman performed for us In Gaither Chapel at 7:30 PM, He was energetic, uplifiting and enthusiastic! He sang a variety of songs In a diverse format. He started out with some fast songs and then slowed down the pace In order to put us in the mood for some thoughts he had to share. Steven talked about how we should have a quiet time In prayer with God and to read the scripture daily. He humored the audience with a story about a woman who was having a baby and the only verse she could remember was, "Jesus weptl" He wanted us to try to keep Jesus in our lives throughout each week and each day even If It was only one little word remembered that was special. Steven Curtis Chapman was eight years old when he met the Lord. He was brought up In a Christian home and everything he did seemed to work out STEVEN CURTIS CHAPtlAN SHARES HIS PERSONAL TESTIMONY TO A CAPTIVE AUDIENCE OF STUDENTS for him. Until recently, when hls home caught fire, he was having family problems, and everything In his life seemed to be falling apart, he never realized the need for total faith In Jesus. He wrote a song based on the scripture, “In this world you will have trouble, but take heart, I am always with you, for you were created for a purpose." Chapman stated, "Have fellowship with God and God will get you through, he carried me and he will carry you, Hls word Is faithful." Steven was fifteen years old when he wrote hls first song. Steven Is married and hls wife's name Is Mary Beth. He has one daughter, Emily, who Is nineteen months old. Mary Beth Is very family oriented and It's hard on her when Steven travels. She has grown to be' very supportive though. Steven has hls priorities set: first Is his life Is the Lord, second, his family, third, hls ministry. Mary Beth and Emily travel with him frequently. Maybe the reason she wasn't with him at this concert is because they are expecting another child. Steven expressed that life on the road is hard because you have to be diligent with your quiet time. He also stated that life on the road also has Its advantages. "You get to know what people are feeling and how to minister to them," he said. Steven was approached by producer Greg Nelson (Sandl Patti and Steve Green's producer) about recording his music. Steven said "I was a writer for Benson Company at the time and this opportunity fell into place after earnest prayer and then the Lord opened doors,” Steven's songs have been recorded by the Imperials, Whiteheart, Sandi Patti, Truth, Glen Campbell, DMD Band, Benny Hester, Silverwind and Gold Cityl WoVil Steven's own favorite artists include BeBe and CeCe WInan, Dallas Holm, Steve Fry, and Whiteheart. Hls favorite secular artists are Huey Lewis, Bruce Hornsby and Ricky Scaggs. How would we desribe Steven Curtis Chapman's music style? He describes it as being adult contemporary with a pop-rock, up tempo flavor. Although the concert wasn't well attended by our college students there were those present who had a great time and got a lot out of It! Steven sang a song called, "Hiding Place' based on Psalm 36:7, which we would like to conclude with. "How precious is your unfailing love. Both high and low among men find refuge In the shadow of your wing."
