IS THAT ALL? (THE ALETHEIA RECENTLY RECEIVED THIS TRUE LIFE ACCOUNT. WE FELT IT MAY BE OF SOME INTEREST TO THE READERS OF OUR PAPER.) The following statement was read Into the Congressional Record by Chris Smith (R-NJ) during the recent debate over the Hyde Amendment. (The Amendment, which prohibits federal payment for Medlcade abortions passed for another year, but only because pro-abortion opponents let It slip through unchallenged because they didn't want to lose a larger bill to which It was attached.) The statement Is by Nancy Jo Mann, founder of Women Exploited by Abortion: “1 went in and I asked, ’What are you going to do to me?" Mann's account of her abortion begins. "All he (the abortionist) did was look at my stomach and say, "I’m going to take a little fluid out, put a little fluid In, you'll have severe cr«»nps and expel the fetus." *! said, ‘Is that all?'" He said, 'That's all." "It did not sound too bad. But what that doctor described to me was not the truth. "Once they put In the saline, there’s no way to reverse It. And for the next hour and a half I felt my daughter thrash around violently while she was being choked, poisoned, burned and suffocated to death. 1 didn't know any of that was going to happen. And 1 remember talking to her and i remember telling her I didn't want to do this. I wished she could live. And yet she was dying and I remember her very last kick on her left side. She had no strength left. "I've tried to Imagine that kind of death, a pillow put over us, suffocating. In four minutes we'd pass out. We'd have that gift of passing out and then dying. But It took her and hour and a half Just to die. "Then 1 was given an Intravenous Injection to help stimulate labor for 12 hours. And at 5:30 AM on the 31st of October 1 delivered my daughter whose name Is now Charmalne Marie. She was 14 Inches long. She weighed over a pound and a half. She had a head of hair and her eyes were opening. "I got to hold her because the nurses didn't make It to the room In time. I delivered the girl myself. They grabbed her out of my hands and threw her, threw her. Into a bedpan." The story of Mann's abortion, read Into the record by Smith, penetrated the rhetorical cloak that conceals the reality of abortion. SCOTT RUSSO Now that I've got your attention. Just let me clarify my position. Catholic with a small "c" simply means "universal" and I think we all will agree that Jesus' teachings are and always will be "universal." I Just used the phrase as my eye catcher, and It has obviously worked since you're reading this editorial. Anyway, what I really have to say has absolutely nothing to do with religion, so I'm going to get off that subject before I really get In trouble. What I want to talk about is athletics. Especially, athletics here at M-AC. I know It Is a very, very, weak subject that only athletes and athletic supporters care about, but I needed an editorial and this was the easiest one for me to write. f have a few basic proposals to make that I think should get some consideration. First, It seems that soccer Is budgeted for the least amount of money than any of the other male sports. Why Is that? It would only make sense, that a school's "Homecoming" sport be given an equal amount or even a little more funding In order to produce a little more. Furthermore, In the Carolina's, talented baseball and basketball players are In abundance, while talented soccer players are outnumbered at least lO-l. It would seem logical that the soccer program would be given as equal a billing as the other sports since they need to compete Harder with other schools ih order to get the players to present a somewhat competitive team. To further the subject, athletes on this campus make up approximately 1/3 of the student body. They get about as much support as the Contras do. How can this school expect any of It's athletic teams to excell In the region, when they compete against teams whose athletic budgets are probably 5 times what ours Is? Most teams In the region probably spend more money on one sport, than we do on all six of ours. I think the time has come for M-AC to recognize that a large percentage of the student body Is made up of athletes, and that these athletes should be given the financial support they need In order to represent this school In a manner that would be In the best Interests of the school. Winning teams and nice athletic facilities are a top drawing card, and this school should realize the potential monetary value associated with both.
