CHARLES RISHER:
MAKING HISTORY "
AT M AC
RENEE
As I ascended the staircase to
McLeod's Third floor, I saw Dr. Rtscher,
my interviewee, gazing out the window
at the beautiful Montreat mountains. I
gave a slight knock at the door (so I
wouldn't startle him) and was gladly
recieved Into his office and asked to
have a seat. As I made my way into his
office, I noticed the many books on his
shelves, as most professor's and
doctor's have after many years of hard
work. Several diplomas were hanging
on the wall from various prestigious
institutes to show the rewards of all
those years of tedious studying. I sat
down quite nervously since this was my
first Interview and began asking him
general questions that I thought the
college would like to know. Dr. Rischer
made me feel quite at home and what's
better, he did the Interview for mel 1
asked one question and he took off into
his past.
Although Dr. Rischer was bom in
Newport, Rhode Island, he grew up In
Mississippi because his father
travelled with the Military. After high
school he went on to Beihaven College
and majored In History. There he also
met his wife, who, by the way. Is a
Montreat-Anderson College alumni. He
continued to pursue his education and
attended Mississippi State University
where he received a Masters In History
JENKIN55^^ ^
diiu later a
Ph.D. During this course of
time. Dr. Rischer and his wife had two
children. Randy, who is now fourteen,
and Laurel, who is now ten.
As Dr. Rischer's interest in education
excelled, he decided to move to Georqia
ror better opportunities. There he
taught at Dalton Junior College,
received a Master's of Divinities at
Emory and accepted a scholarship at
Princeton. While furthering his
education and teaching at night shcool,
he pastored a Methodist Church In
Jackson, 6a. Other schools he taught at
were; Gordon Junior College, and
Georgia State. Dr. Rischer also taught
at Mercer University, was Director of
Admissions for Macon Presbyterian Day
School and taught prison Inmates
through a program at Brutan-Parker
College.
I asked Dr. Rishcer what brought him
here to Montreat. I found the story he
told me to be quite interesting. Twenty
years ago his wife brought him here to
see her old alma mater. Ever since that
first sight of Montreat, he has longed to
be here. It was not until after he gave
up the dream of wanting to be at
Montreat that the Lord allowed him to
come here. Soon a friend told him of an
opening and Dean Wilson contacted him.
Dr. Rischer's prayer was answered. God
finally brought him here and we're very
glad he did.
