GOVT GOSSIP STEPHANIE BOWSMAN There were three main Issues brought up for discussion at the last Student Government Association meeting on Monday, September 21. These were smoking In the cafeteria, the condition of the soccer field, and telephones In the Belk Campus Center. The question of whether smoking should be allowed In the cafeteria or not was brought up by some concerned students before the meeting. Members of the S6A looked Into this area and It was concluded that the cafeteria Is ‘a public place" and therefore It would be unfair to take away students' rights to smoke. Sectioning the cafeteria Into smoking and non-smoking areas Is the proposed compromise. The far corner near the Howerton doors may. be the new smoking section. The article "Where the Buffalo Roam" In the first Issue of the Alethela has raised quite a stir In the SGA. The matter was brought to Dean McDowell's attention and he Is going to try to get some Improvements started by this Spring. The college Is looking Into the money aspect right now. Everyone In the SGA agrees that the field Is a safety hazard. Each year there are more and more Injuries. One problem Is that the field was not watered last year because of the drought. The field needs terracing to drain the rainwater. In order to accomplish this, the entire field needs to be graded and resodded. Hopefully with the help of the SGA, Montreat-Anderson can return the field Into the beautiful spot It used to be. Do we need pay phones In the Belk Campus Center? The SGA thinks we do. The only pay phones available, at this time, are In the dorms and those are often being used, or are not In a quiet enough area, or are too far away for convenience sake. Pay phones In the BCC would be quiet and convenient. The wall behind the glass case containing a pottery display was specifically designed for payphones but they were never Installed. Hopefully, some can be Installed on that wall or near the elevator on the second floor. These phones would provide private and convenient places for conversation. WELL DONE "Each one should use whatever gift he has received to serve others, faithfully administering God's grace In Its various forms, 1 Peter 4:10 (NIV).“ This verse sums up Greg Howard through and through. Some of the upperclassmen already know Greg through his work as Large Group Coordinator In '85-'86. This Involved both Vespers, concerts, etc. Greg used his gifts In music to make the spiritual life enriching and memorable. Between graduation and his reappearance as a M-AC student, Greg traveled with a gospel group known as the CarolInalns. It Is an experience he grew and learned a lot from. His part In the group was playing the piano and when spare time was available, composing songs. Making contacts, recording music and giving concerts counterbalanced the long miles traveling across the States, the food at the fast food places, the sleeping In motels. During this time, his knowledge of the music Industry was greatly Increased. Besides "learning the ropes" about life on the road, Greg spent many hours at the recording studios. Last school year the Carolinians gave a concert at M-AC and Greg mentioned the heavy schedule at the studios. A Christian walk Is harder during these times, but the trials strengthen the walk. God gave JAMES WALDROUPE Greg the courage and motivation to keep going. Along the way, Greg met some Interesting people; Sandl Patti, Lisa Welchell, Bill Gaither, Larry Gatlin, Mike English (Gaither Vocal Band), and Pam Grlmslev. Enqllsh and Grlmslev honored Greg by recording a duet that Greg wrote called "Tear Down the Walls." Greg's exstensive musical background helps him tremendously In the SCA position he holds as Large Group Coordinator. Greg sometimes sets up concerts through contacts he has made while touring. Sometimes researching album covers and magazines puts him In touch with artists. One of his other sources Is we the students here at M-AC. Not only do the students help Greg, but also the faculty and staff here at M-AC. Mrs. A Is one person cited for her helpfulness. 'Mrs. A has been great to work with on concerts. She and i both want better quality," said Greg. A goal Is to shine God's light through Montreat to Asheville and the surrounding area. Advertising of such events Is In the newpapers, on the radio, and In letters sent to churches and other organizations In the area. Volunteers to help with advertising, concerts, etc. Is always needed. No experience or great talent Is needed because the smallest tasks glorify God. MONTREAT FANS NEEDCHEERING KIM THOMPSON Ah yes, a Christian college, everyone will be so friendly and compassionate. This is the common view of most new students here at Montreat; myself included. The air of the campus Is that of support and spirit. This la generally true; Individually you can usually get support from all sides. However, this is not the case when It comes to supporting Montreat’s athletics. I attended my first home soccer game with the misconception that there would be lots of fans cheering the team to victory. This Illusion was shattered as 1 listened to the few fans that came out. If a mistake was made, a specific player’s name would be called out; other put-downs came forth also. This Is the kind of behavior one would expect from the opposing team’s fans, not their owa How do you think the players on these teams feel when this happens? What If It was you? No one likes to be put down when they're working hard at pleasing someone else. As Christies are we not told to support andLuplIft each other? Are sports teams an exception to this rule? I feel people here at Montreat are neglecting their Job as fans. It's the coach's Job to point out mistakes to the players, not the fan’s. Fans are needed to cheer the team on. I hope I never, have to witness what I did at that game. So why don’t you fans get out their and DO YOUR JOBI 'CONE ON. LlZr
