ALETHIA STAFF; T Dr. Rich Gray-Advisor Nancy Nichols-Editor Kim Thompson-Associate Editor Mindy Clinord Peggy Leis Todd Cost Pris Maxwell Greg Ferrell Scott Russo Alice Harding Garrett Stonfeild Greg Howard John Stiles Renee Jenkins lot too long ago ! '.vatched the tail ' 3 'Star frek-3-Thon" on WHNS- The last eoisode, entitled "The er'e," told the story of a My Testifflony Tomoko (Chico) Takahashi I was born in Tokyo, Japan, and I grew up in a Christian family. My parents had become Christians as teenagers shortly after World War il. When I was a baby, i was baptized and went to Sunday school. As I grew up, however, l realized my friends were looking at me. Since none of them went to church or knew Jesus, 1 was too scared to tell them that I believed in God. 1 did go to church though, because my parents were strict. Robertson for President? What a Nightmare! In the most recent article of The Alethia. many of you may have noticed an advertisement stating, "ROBERTSON FOR PRESIDENT". While I can surely appreciate the initiative of a student taking the time to campaign for a candidate, as I read this I was caught off guard. For you see, to me, the thought of Mr. Pat. Robertson being President of this nation is nothing less than frightening. Now please don't think that this is Just another editorial about why someone should or should not be this or that, for 1 didn't really oppose Mr. Robertson until I saw a recent edition of CBS's West 57th. On March 5, the show did a segment on Mr. Robertson in which they interviewed various friends and employees of his recent television show. The 700 Club. I learned an Immense amount in the short twenty minutes that the documentary ran. First,West 57th ran a clip of Robertson on his show, as he shocked not only his audience but also his two co-hosts as he said that a person should by no means hold a public office if he were not a Christian or a "Jewish person". While his reasons were because the person was not being guided by God, Robertson was in direct violation of the first Amendment of the Constitution of the United States. The highlight of the segment came when an ex-employee of The 700 Club spoke about Mr. Robertson's certain "revelations" from God. Like most of our pure and honest televangelists, whom God so readily chooses to talk to, Robertson claims that God has told him to do many things. While some of these In my family there were also two brothers. The older one of my brothers had a brain tumor and went home to be with the Lord seven years ago. The doctors discovered that he had the tumor-when I was twelve. Then, my younger brother lost his abilty to hear end when he was two years of age. I TV. believe the reason I got over the death Men of my brother and my younger brother's telepathic humanoid race that captured handicap was because my parents knew humans and other intelligent creatures God, and they stressed to me:" God has in crcer to give these races images and a purpose In everything." I did not sensations that they enjoyed most, doubt that God loved me, but sometimes These illusions were so realistic that wondered about the why of my the captives accepted these imitations family's sufferings. of life instead of reality. Similarly, As I grew into the high school the telepaths became narcotlcally years, I thought that, since there are addicted to watching these more Christians in America, I might be dream-lives. Hence, at the conclusion more comfortable believing in God and of the episode, ^the leader of the going to church over there. This was telepaths advised the reality-seeking certainly my biggest reason for Captain Kirk, "We have illusion. You desiring to come to the United States, have reality. Choose what you think is Though I cared for my family very much best." and missed them, I soon fell in love On that thought, I'm personally with this country. glad that man does not have that option. 1 continued my high school training if v/e did, we d all choose to experience at a Presbyterian Christian School in only the thougts, sensations, and Rabun Gap, Georgia. I found many feelings we want to, never deal with Reality What A Concept! Garrett Stanfield con'l. pg. 3 "things" were successful, many times Robertson acted on a whim wnen he thought God was speaking to him, and the results were disasterous. The scariest part of the segment came when the ex-employee orooosed a hypothetical situation in which Robertson said that God told him to push the button (THE BUTTON) because Christ was coming back. Now as silly as that may seem, the ex-employee went on to say that when Pat believed that God was speaking to him, he would not stray an inch from what he believed God was telling him to do. The thought of Pat pushing that button because God told him to is not so much utterly ridiculous as It is frightening. Now don't get me wrong , I am in no way being blasphemous, but I wonder if God would tell Pat to push the button in the same way that He told him to buy that Rolex or that 1.2’million dollar house he lives in while thousands are homeless in Los Angeles, just a hop, skip and a jump from Mr. Robertson's cozy little home. Now one main argument people supporting Robertson have is that America needs a man with morals. Granted, that would be great, but why not Jesse Jackson? Or could It be that America Is not ready for a black President? Whatever the case, Mr. Pat Robertson should stick to being a televangelist, (though he denies it, this is where his true roots really lie) and lead the responsibility of running this country to someone a wee bit more responsible, like George Bush, now there's a real politician! reality.again, and become recluses like the telepathic schizoids in "Star Trek." Or do we have that option? I look at my own life, and see myself living with illusion, too. For example, there's the role-playing games (otherwise known as Dungeons & Dragons and games based on its format). The game is an advanced form of playing "make believe," where the player plays the part of a knight-errant, cowboy, star traveller, freedom fighter, or whatever else strikes his fancy. Why deal with the real world when the realm of the game is so much more exciting? In the lobbies of our dorms is the opium relayed through cable: the T'V. Why go through the hassle of making your own adventure in life when you can see and here a facsimile thereof with the press of a button and the turn of a kncD? ;n the 1980's, the Age of Apathy, it's no wonder the couch potato phenomenon got so much appeal among Americans. We lose ourselves in so many ways possible through modern music, novel literature, computerized games, and so many other ways, not to decapitalize from flat out daydreaming. By doing this, we neglect the problems around us in the world; ergo, the stitches in time we don't do while absent from reality become nine, (Keep in mind that I'm not snubbing an occasional breather from the daily routine; I'm warning against "too much of a good thing,") Oh, here's something to ponder: while in the dream world, we can't tell the lost souls of the (real) world of a real Christ. We must not slacken in the effort to bring the people to the Great I ,Am, Not the Great Imagined, but the j Am! He is the One that gave us reality 30 we can think, touch, see, hear, taste, experience, live ... and be! For real! Reality or illusion? I'll take reality.
