FRLL SEASON BUILDS UHITV
IN n-flC BASEBALL
BRAD OWENS
While the oro-Baseball season is
nearing its end, the M-AC Baseball team
has already started practicing for the
Fall/Spring seasons. The team has been
gaining unity and strength for the
coming year. Rumor has it that this
year's baseball team is going to be one
of the best ever. 'Hof is the word, I
believe, that first comes to mind. The
team includes several battle scarred
veterans as well as some new talent.
The hike to the baseball field has
usually discourged student
participation, but this years team
deserves just as much support as the
other M-AC teams, and to miss some
great victories would be a tragedy. So
when the team has a scrimmage or
gome, hike up to the baseball field, and
let the Cavaliers make it more than
worth the tnp.

The girls volleyball team was
recently announced, and the campus
seems fired up about the coming
season. The team consists of
Freshwomen Tammy Bryson, Tashe
Landrum, Vicki Harrup, Tracey Jones,
and Tern Hedderick. The Sophomore
members include Margaret Spearman,
Grade Mann, and Melissa Hatchet. The
only Junior on the team is Carol Fox,
and the only Senior is Paula Johnson.
Carol and Paula are co-captains while
Carla Smith manages this bunch.
Since Paula is the only Senior on
the squad, I thought it would be
interesting to find out a little about
the lifestyle of our women s volleyball
Senior co-captain. Paula is in her third
year at M-AC (she went to Appalachian
State Univ. last year). Her favorite
sport is volleyball, and she brings two
years of experience into this year's
season. She was also co-captain her
sophomore year M-AC.
Paula's birthday is November
seventeenth and her favorite candy-bar
is a Snickers, so hit the
candy-machines now and avoid the
pre-birthday rush. Her favorite kitchen
utensil is an eggbeater, end her
pajamas are really a T-shirt.
Paula shaves her legs about
halfway because "the hair on top turns
blonde in the Summer' She also states,
"My pits take precedence at least once a
week." Paula has had her ears pierced
since first grade When questioned on
the AIDS lecture, she said that it was
interesting because it pointed out a lot
of misconceptions she had. She hopes
to be married someday, and eventually
havp thrpp in fniir rhilrlrpn with
adoption a possibility. Finally, Paula
uses her favorite Bible verse. Psalm
37:4, to describe her zeal for
volleyball, "Delight thyself also in the
Lord; and he shell give thee the desires
of they heart." One of Paula's desires is
volleyball, so she's going for the gusto
in her Senior year.
THE UONAN
Tracey Sauls, from Bowling Green,
Kentucky, has become the first woman
in a long time to play on the men's
soccer team here at Montreat. When
asked about her intentions, Tracey told
us her story.
A gymnast for ten years, Tracey
was a philosophy major at South East
State Missouri last year. The
gymnastics team w'hich she was a part
of placed second in the nationals.
Tracey had previously suffered
ligament damagein her right ankle. Her
ankle had been placed in casts several
times in hopes of the ligament danage
would heal naturally. It didn't work. Tt
the end of last year, she was told that
her gymanstics contract would not be
renewed unless she had surgery to
correct her ankle.
Tracey had become familiar with
Montreat through youth coferences she
has atlended her for five years. She
felt God's calling here and transfered.
Leaving gymnasties left a gap in her
life that Tracey needed filled. She and
a friend began joking about trying out
for the men's soccer team. Invited to
play in an afternoon "fun" game sparked
her interest. What began as a joke
turned into reality as Tracey decided to
try out for the team.
Tracey expected the guys to make
fun of her during practice and tryouts.
THE UNIFORN
In her interview, she. said,'"It really
showed this is a Christian college by
the way the guys acted toward me."
She was accepted and supported, not
just by the team, but also by the coach.
"Everyone was so encouraging," she
said.
There have been a few difficulties
arising from Tracey being the only girl
on the team For example, tlie locker
room scene. Tracey has a separate
place to change before joining her
teammates in the locker room for a
team meeting. After the meeting, the
team emerges amidst the curious and
surprised stares of the opposing team.
However, Tracey is still supported
by her teammates. They don't treat her
any differently because she's a girl.
Teammate Scott Higgins said, "...we
give no;?, she gives 110^. She's just
another soccer player when we're on
the field."
Tracey feels that soccer was God's
way of replacing gymnastics in her life.
Now a Christian Ministries and Vouth
Adolescence Major, Tracey hopes to
'have a girls' soccer team Itere at
Montreat in the future. She emphasized
that playing soccer was not for the
publicity or to make her look tough. It
was only to replace gymnastics.
“Soccer is fun," she said, "and I hope to
play next year." Good luck, Traceyl
