CflURLIERS KICK PIEDtIOHT FROH OHE EHD OF FIELD TO OTHER SHANNON ANN HODGINS After watching rrtany long and yes, hard soccer practices, I have come to the conclusion that the fl-AC soccer team is a group of dedicated men and women. The team has high hopes for the upcoming year— together with the combined skill of the veterans and freshmen, how can they miss? This year's player roster is as follows: 'Wes Mathis - Starting Keeper Paul Ushko - Keeper Todd Wilson Adrian Taylor Drew Boren Tracy Series Warren Turnipseed Andrew Motaung Jeff V/ilcox Dave Miller Scott Higgins Tom Bashana Marc Duarte Bill V/illard Dave Bush Tony Soams Mark Norton Peter Silen Hugh Hutchinson Mgr. Earl Smith Players spend much of their practice time devoted to never-ending drills, running and scrimmaging. (They also run in the morning.) Though the team is often tired during their practices, they show extraordinary team spirit as they encourage each other to do their best. The players anticipate an excellent year and improve each day. As Jeff Wilcox says, "'We need to learn eachother's styles of playing and adopt to it so that we can play much better The tl-AC soccer players tiave the benefit of not one but two coaches. Steve Fredrickson coaches ttie playeis for offensive and defensive. Tim Hill Coaches the Keepers. Both coaches devote much of their time in order to produce a winning team. The players would like to extend a well-felt "thank you" to their coaches for not only their time but also their patience (and of course for getting them out of bed to run at 6:30 every morning). Montreat enjoyed a well-earned victory against Piedmont, Tuesday, September 6. The final score was 4-3 for that action packed game. Montreat definitely showed their skill and superiority in the second half of the game. Two of the goals were scored by Marc Duarte who played a very challenging and excellent game of soccer. The other two goals were scored by Warren Turnipseed and Andrew Motaung. Dave Miller assisted in three goals. All players played their hardest and there was no stopping them. Even though the other team was very good— Montreat overcame! Freshman Wes Mathis, Starting Keeper, did an exceptional job and made some exciting saves. Jeff Wilcox and Freshman Mark Norton played a very hard game with Jeff almost scoring a goal. Adrian Taylor played a very “mean" game of soccer and showed his team spirit by giving 100S even though he was in some pain. Several foreign players are on the team and add a lot to the showmanship. The players would also like to thank the fans who showed up to encourage them. As Warren Turnipseed says, "fall come see up!" IT'S HOT UHETHER THEV UIN OR LOSE, BUT HOU XHEV kick the ball Shannon Ann Hodgins Although Montreat soccer players do not always achieve their goal of winning that special soccer game, they do ultimately prove themiselves to be not only good sportsmen, but also true Christian athletes. In spite of recent losses to some excellent teams. Montreat players are keeping their heads held high, team spirit in their heart, and definitely not losing their aggressiveness. On Thursday, September 6, M-AC players lost to Brevard College at their home playing field. The players did not give up, and the score of that game does not at all reflect the hard work and effort put forth by the players. Brevard is a swift-moving team, and did play an excellent game. The final score was 5-0, and although defeated. Montreat does remain a superior team. On Tuesday, September 13, Montreat battled with Spartanburg- Methodist College at Montreat. The game was exciting to watch due to the fact that Spartanburg is one of the better teams Montreat has and will play this year.
