Tim Hill, assistant coach of the
Montreat Cavalier soccer players,
granted me the honor the other day of
interviewing him. Tim is a serious
young man, dedicated both to the
leadership of his school and to the
coaching of the soccer team. Tim says,
"I feel confident a? a leader nn the
soccer field, and I lead in SGA [Student
Government Association] to the best of
my ability." Tim is a senior at
Montreat, and plans to graduate with a
degree in Christian Ministries, Youth
and Adolescent Studies. One day Tim
hopes to coach his own college or high
school team, maybe at M-AC!
Tim has played soccer for two
years at Montreat and also at Georgia
Southern. As at Montreat, he has also
assistant coached at Georgia Southern.
At the moment, he is the keeper coach,
and feels that his guys "have improved
50-75%." He enjoys coaching, but loves
to play the sport but is not able this
year to play because of two reasons:
one of his knees has damage to both the
ligaments and cartilage, and he has
already completed his two year
eligibility.
Tim feels that soccer is "not only
a sport but a job," and he expects only
the best out oi nis players. He blends
good sportsmanship with Christian
ethics and encourages his players to do
the same. He has heard a few of the
soccer players saying how much
Montreat as a college has increased
their faith in God. He believes that a
part of soccer is witnessing to others.
Tim does occasionally miss
playing soccer; he says, 'The hardest
thing for me to do is watch them play
and not be able to, it's my job to watch
them," and he feels frustration for
riewcorners' trying to "learn simple
drills" which he feels a "college level
soccer player should already know." He
admits that they need to keep
practicing; they need to learn the drills
and that “you can't expect miracles
overnight or in one season."
When asked about Montreat'S/'
record of 3-7, he says, "I feel that we
have five soccer field players, maybe
three think well, the other two love to
play, and the rest want to learn the
sport and they are doing a good job of
it. However, it's hard to make a good
conference team out of five players."
Tim • comments that they are losing
because they don't have a good offence;
"No matter how many get scored, we
cannot win any way unless offence puts
it in the net."
Tim is a very competant coach and
enjoys coaching th^i soccer team; “1
enjoy coaching with my keepers." Tim
is a great asset to the team and to
M-AC.'

1 admit that when 1 went to Coach
Patsy Neal for a final wrap-up of the
girls' volleyball season, I expected to
hear the same old stuff, "they really
worked hard," and, "keep looking for a
healthy bunch next year," you know . . .
the same old cliche excuses that you
hear every year from the Atlanta
Braves, but what coach Neal gave me
were some totally unexpected
statistics.
for instance, the girls came within
two points of 'Winning eleven of their
thirteen losses. A record of seven wins
and thirteen losses doesn't look great
on paper, but to come within two points-
of beating the eighteenth ranked girls
volleyball team in the nation is not too
shabby! In the final two series of the
season, the lady Cavs destroyed
Piedmont Bible college, twice, and lost
two to Anderson, the eighteenth ranked
team in the nation.

Several bright spots appear at the
end of this season for the girls. First of
all, the hustle and teamwork displayed
in every game should be, and is, well
appreciated by their supporters. And
second. Coach Neal hopes to have
everyone returning next year, with the
exception of the team's lone senior,
Paula Johnson. If everyone does return,
the nucleus of the team will only be
stronger and better prepared for their
challengers.
Coach Neal was very proud of the
performance of the team saying, "they
were really a lot better than their
record indicates ... the two point
difference is a stat that should impress
anyone, considering the amount of
really tough teams we played. The girls
did a super job . . . just super." 1
couldn't agree more. The girls
volleyball team did a good job this
year, and hopefully, they will be back
next year to do an even better job.

Ah, the woes and perils of college
level athletics. The girls volleyball
team has recently experienced some of
the woes. With losses on Oct. 4 to
Salem and North Greenville, and losses
to Queens College on the 39th and
Averett College on the twenty-ninth
the M-AC girls volleyball team is
more need of our support now than ever.
A loss to Salem college after the win
against Piedmont Bible College on the
twenty-ninth.
Their need for our support now is
imperative. I have confidence that our
girls volleyball team is waiting to
explode, and I feel sorry for the team(s)
that will receive the blast. The more
people that show up for the games, the
better. Let our Lady Cavs know that we
support them, win or lose. In

On October 14 Montreat Soccer
players battled to the very end against
Brevard. The final score was 3-1 when
the referee called time. Although
defeated. Montreat remains *1 in our
eyes.
Montreat did play a very good
game, and held off Brevard with a good
show of defense. The player's faces "lit
up" when they scored their goal.
Montreat was a team to be proud of at
that moment.
“After the game the players enjoyed
a steak dinner sponsored by the M-AC
cheerler&ders. The student body was
also invited to this dinner. This was
one way that the school could show
their appreciation to the players for all
the hard work throughout the year.

working and it's gonna' keep getting
more and more exciting, so come out
and watch what happens!"
The girls record is now four wins
and six losses. The rest of the schedule
consits of away games against
Tusculum and Maryville on the 13lh,
North Greenville on the 17th, Anderson
on the 19th. The final two games are at
home against Piedmont Bible on the
20th and Anderson on the 27th.
