Page 8, The Aletheia Montreat-Anderson College Alpha Chi Member A major milestone in the development of Montreat-Anderson College’s academic program was reached on November 14 when the college wascharteredasamemberinAlphaChi.aNational College Honor Scholastic Society. Alpha Chi is a co-educational society whose purpose is to promote academic excellence and exemplary character among college and university students and to honor those who achieve such distinction. As a general honor society. Alpha Chi admits to membership students from all academic disciplines. Membership in Alpha Chi recognizes previous accomplishments and provides opportunity for continued growth and service. It seeks above all else to serve the needs of the students who comprise its membership. As a phrase from its constitution suggests, Alpha Chi seeks to find ways to assist them in “making scholarship effective for good.” According to Dr. Tisa Lewis, a Christian ministries and human development professor at Montreat-Anderson College and the Alpha Chi sponsor, active membership in Alpha Chi is restricted to not n;ore than' the top ranking ten percent of members of the junior and senior classes. “High scholarship is the primary requisite for membership,” Lewis said, “but good character and reputation are also essential characteristics. I think it is important to recognize these students. Hopefully, these students will encourage other students at Montreat-Anderson to excel. Alpha Chi membership is a wort'" ;■ goal for freshmen and sophomores to seek.” Recipients and founding members of the Montreat-Anderson ALPHA CHI MEMBERS ■ Six Montreat-Anderson College students were inducted into Alpha Chi as founding members. The students are (top row left to right) Knox Bridges from Charlotte, North Carolina; Kristine Buckwalterfrom LitUz, Pennslyvania; and Jeff Kuhn from Newland, North Carolina. The bottom row (left to right) is Dr. Lewis, Janet Grogan from Statesville, North Carolina; Pandy Under from Middletown, New York; Tracey Sauls from Bowling Green, Kentucky; and Dr. John T. Newton. Dr. Lewis and Dr. Newton are co-sponsors and professors at Montreat-Anderson College. College Charter are Jeff Kuhn, president; Kristine Buckwalter, secretary, Knox Bridges, student delegate; Tracey Sauls, Janet Grogan and Pandy Linder. “Even though the charter group of students is small, I would put our students up against Alpha Chi members at much larger institutions,” Lewis said. “The majority of the students would go on and apply to graduate school.” Participating in the chartering ceremonies were President Silas M. Vaughn; Dr. Lewis; Dr. John T. Newton, Bible and philosophy professor; Dr. Joseph E. Pryor, executive director of Alpha Chi; and Dr. Larry Wilson, vice president/dean of the college. Showing obvious pleasure with the recognition, Dr. Vaughn said, “We are honored and pleased that we were asked to join one of the top three national scholastic honor societies so soon after becoming a four-year college, ■niis is certainly a history-making step for us. Next to accreditation, to be recognized by an honor society is extremely important in attracting able students and is an indication of our being recognized for academic excellence.” In related news. Dr. Lewis said that Dr. Newton had been nominated and appointed as assistant sponsor to Alpha Chi. As for the future Lewis said, “Alpha Chi members could start tutoring students who may have academic trouble, sponsor scholarly seminars on various disciplines such as history, family science, Bible and religion, and promote excellence in scholarships." B.B, Barns A Store Worth Hiking To By TIM PERRY Review Editor Being at Montreat, chances are that sooner or later you'll end up in one of Ben Fortson's classes, or just being surrounded by all the Appalachian beauty, you'll do the unthinkable and start to enjoy nature. You'll be needing some hiking boots and outdoor clothing, and if you're not careful you can end up spending a fortune on it. Well, throw away that L.L. Bean catalog and drive out to B.B. Barns Outdoor Specialties, just across 1240 from River Ridge Mall on Fairview Road. in Asheville. You'll find everything you need from wool socks to sweaters to incredibly cool hats, and at reasonable prices. They've even got topographical maps (like the ones Ben has) of Montreat and anything else in the area. Now if you're like me, and you've decided to enjoy nature through your windshield, do your camping in a Winnebago, and never again break a sweat, the clothes still look great and there's lots more. They've got gourmet tea and coffee, and you can sample a cup while you browse. They've got soup mixes, oil candles, lots of brass stuff your mom would kill for, a great selection of gardening supplies and English gardening tools, plenty of books about hiking, camping, gardening, and nature in general. There are also a few unusual things.dike Pawley's Island hammocks and real wooden toboggan sleds. If you think that's a lot, I left out half of it for the sake of brevity. The owners, Barney Bryant and Ned Gibson, have tried to create a store that carries the kind of quality stuff you'd normally have to order from specialty catalogs. I think they've succeeded, and the place has more character than any other store I've found in the area. Check it out for yourself.
