!Pagc ^ouT, TJu S\ktfieia They Can Do It' By: Sarah Whitecotton Staff Writer Many people tend to overlook the excellence of women's teams when discussing athletic events. However, the Lady Cavaliers of Mon- treat-Anderson College are out to prove that a woman's team can and does know how to play some ball. With skills developed in practice, inheren t skills necessary to be a good ball players, excellent leadership and coaching, and hard work, this years woman's basketball team is ready to conquer. The women's basket ball team started the season on a positive note with a scrimmage against Brevard College. Although the team came out behind in the score, the team is very optimis tic. "It was a learning experience and I am ex tremely impressed. We had eight out of out ten players playing because two were injured. It was so encouraging to see everyone out there working hard," Coach Dana Bostic stated. The women's basket ball team has three re turning players with seven new recruits to start the season. Coach Bostic stated that, "Shayna White, a junior from Durham, and Gra- cie Mann, a senior from Mann's Harbor, are both going to provide great leadership. It rubs off on other players and pumps them up too. Ali son Swanger, a return ing sophomore from Waynesville, runs offen sively and point guards. Junior Trish Lewan- dowsi will help Mann in rebounding, while fresh man Anita Bumgarner is a consistent outside shooter. both Tracy Jones and Judy Davis provide good playing time inside. Others on the team include Shan non Whitaker, Yolanda (Skeet) Bridges, and Shon Snipes." One of the team's goals this year, the re cruitment of quality athletes, has already been accomplished. Bostic is excited about the season; "We have re cruited good players that are good on the court as well as academically. I want them to be known as being good students as well as good athletes." "We have a com pletely new look-a new style-up tempo this year. We have ten players which causes everyone to play. We want to put pressure on the other teams. The ten players that we have are a strong team. I know they can do it, "Coach Bostic said. In addition to Coach Bostic's leadership, the Cavaliers are also receiv ing the wisdom of for mer player and student, Carol Fox. Fox has as sumed the position of Assistant Coach to Dana Bostic. Together, they hope to produce a win ning team this season. Bostic expressed the wish to, "thank every one that supported the fundraiser. We sur passed out goal and that will help us to get the little extras that make the team." "I am really encour aged because I feel that we can surprise a few teams. We are trying to build the women's ath letic department and have people begin to notice us." Each student can help the Lady Cava liers team by attending the games, and support ing these ladies through out the season. The Lady Cavaliers already have one win for the season. On Satur day, Nov. 10, they de feated Covenant College by a considerable mar gin. This victory repre sents a starting point and a foundation of wins for the team to begin build ing upon. This win has undoubtedly raised the confidence level of the entire team.
