Many people tend to
overlook the excellence
of women's teams when
discussing athletic
events. However, the
Lady Cavaliers of Mon-
treat-Anderson College
are out to prove that a
woman's team can and
does know how to play
some ball. With skills
developed in practice,
inheren t skills necessary
to be a good ball players,
excellent leadership and
coaching, and hard
work, this years
woman's basketball
team is ready to conquer.
The women's basket
ball team started the
season on a positive note
with a scrimmage
against Brevard College.
Although the team came
out behind in the score,
the team is very optimis
tic. "It was a learning
experience and I am ex
tremely impressed. We
had eight out of out ten
players playing because
two were injured. It was
so encouraging to see
everyone out there
working hard," Coach
Dana Bostic stated.
The women's basket
ball team has three re
turning players with
seven new recruits to
start the season. Coach
Bostic stated that,
"Shayna White, a junior
from Durham, and Gra-
cie Mann, a senior from
Mann's Harbor, are both
going to provide great
leadership. It rubs off
on other players and
pumps them up too. Ali
son Swanger, a return
ing sophomore from
Waynesville, runs offen
sively and point guards.
Junior Trish Lewan-
dowsi will help Mann in
rebounding, while fresh
man Anita Bumgarner is
a consistent outside
shooter. both Tracy
Jones and Judy Davis
provide good playing
time inside. Others on
the team include Shan
non Whitaker, Yolanda
(Skeet) Bridges, and
Shon Snipes."
One of the team's
goals this year, the re
cruitment of quality
athletes, has already
been accomplished.
Bostic is excited about
the season; "We have re
cruited good players that
are good on the court as
well as academically. I
want them to be known
as being good students
as well as good athletes."
"We have a com
pletely new look-a new
style-up tempo this year.
We have ten players
which causes everyone
to play. We want to put
pressure on the other
teams. The ten players
that we have are a strong
team. I know they can
do it, "Coach Bostic said.
In addition to Coach
Bostic's leadership, the
Cavaliers are also receiv
ing the wisdom of for
mer player and student,
Carol Fox. Fox has as
sumed the position of
Assistant Coach to Dana
Bostic. Together, they
hope to produce a win
ning team this season.
Bostic expressed the
wish to, "thank every
one that supported the
fundraiser. We sur
passed out goal and that
will help us to get the
little extras that make the
team."
"I am really encour
aged because I feel that
we can surprise a few
teams. We are trying to
build the women's ath
letic department and
have people begin to
notice us." Each student
can help the Lady Cava
liers team by attending
the games, and support
ing these ladies through
out the season.
The Lady Cavaliers
already have one win for
the season. On Satur
day, Nov. 10, they de
feated Covenant College
by a considerable mar
gin. This victory repre
sents a starting point and
a foundation of wins for
the team to begin build
ing upon. This win has
undoubtedly raised the
confidence level of the
entire team.
