Home Alone

Home Alone is a
funny, mischievous
story about the antics of
a young child left to his
own devices; every kid's
dream right? By a mis
hap of confusion, Kevin
is left behind while his
parents and family are
on vacation in France.
The movie introduces
the viewer to the fanta
sies that all kids have of
being 'home alone.'
Home Alone opens
with the Christmas sea
son bringing normal
confusion to an already
abnormal family. Kevin,
the youngest of four
children, and his family
are visited by relatives.
As a present to the fam
ily, a well-to-do Uncle
purchases tickets for the
family to fly to Paris for
the holidays. After a
scuffle with brother
'Spike,' the family scolds
Kevin for always caus
ing trouble. A heated
debate outbreaks with
his mother which ends
with Kevin saying 'I
wish I didn't have a
family.'
In sort of a predict
able twist, when count
ing heads before leaving
for the airport, a neigh
bor-boy is counted as
Kevin. This gives rea
son for Kevin being left
behind. Without a sec
ond thought, and a score
of children, the family
embarks for France
while the neighbor dis
appears. Kevin awakes
to find that the family
has left, and that his wish
had come true.
This is where the
laughs begin. Kevin
lives his dreams by pull
ing stunts for which he
normally would be
punished; some of these
stunts include raiding
Spike's beloved junk
trunk, frightening pizza
delivery men, and bed
jumping.
Without revealing
the whole plot, Kevin is
assaulted by two motley
cat-burglars. The most
hilarious parts occur
during these scenes. It
is not until the family
reaches Paris that they
realize that they had left
Kevin. The mother tries
to return to Chicago and
her child. The rest of the
movie is about the antics
of the return trip and the
apprehension of the
criminals.
In all, the movie is
quite predictable, yet it
does express the desires
of all who were young
once. Through all the
cliches, the movie proves
quite funny. Being the
number four ticket seller
at the box office shows
that this humor is one
that America wants at a
PG. rating. I recommend
Home Alone as—Three
Stars ***.
