Tagc Jour, nJie. !>iletheia Outstanding Teaching Naj Alicea Staff Writer Dr. David Parks, perhaps the finest professor to ever grace our institution, received his Bachelor of Electrical Engineering degree at Geor gia Tech in 1950. Four years later he earned a Bachelor of Divinity from Columbia Theological Senvinary, Deca tur. In 1956 Dr. Parks felt called to be an instrument of God's hope in the mission field. After much prayer. He, his wife Anna, and his chil dren left for Seoul, Korea. They first worked as pioneer evangelist starting churches. But later, because of his back ground in Electrical Engineer ing, God used Dr. Parks' skills to further the reach of a Chris tian radio station in Seoul. In 1967, Dr. Parks felt that he had prepared the young Koreans involved with Christ's radio ministries enough to where he and his family could return to Amer ica, to continue God's work in another capacity. Today, as Dr. Parks looks back on his life, he considers this time in Korea to be a pinnacle. Dr. Parks returned to Weaverville, the town of his youth, to Pastor his home church. He stayed there for seven years, before God called him to teach. In 1973, Dr. Parks came to Montreat- Anderson College as a Bible professor. One of his first classes was filled predomi- Spirtual Emphasis Week Tracy Folk Staff Writer For three days this week, February 12-14, Montreat will hold its annual Spiritual Emphasis Conference. This year the speaker will be a North Carolina native Mr. Albert Long. Mr. Long is an alumnus of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill where he was the second to the last athlete in the college's his tory to letter in four sports: basketball, football, baseball, and track. After his gradu ation he worked for several years before he became the head of his own ministry, Albert Long Happenings, Inc. He is billed as a motivational speaker whose main empha sis is on young f)eople today. Albert Long slvows a deep concern for the problems young people face and one of nantly by the baseball team. He was worried about the interest level that the team would have. Dr. Parks found that these young men, like most young adults are hun gry for an understanding of the word of God. The success of those young men (during an era when the studentbody was more overtly secular than now) has encouraged Dr. Parks, even to this day. Dr. Parks has only aban doned teaching once during his 17 years here, when he served as the Dean of Aca demics from 1980-1983. His love for students and teach ing motivated him to relin quish that post to again be come a full time professor. Dr. Parks says that he has thoroughly enjoyed his time here at Montreat. He admits that he feels younger today than he did 17 years ago, but he still looks through the eyes of years of experience. Today he sees hope for those who put their complete trust in Christ, for Christ is the only way. Dr. Parks will soon be leaving us, he only plans to teach two classes next semes ter, and perhaps will stop teaching after that. Those of us who have had him for a class encourage those of you who haven't, to try to get him next year, it might be your last chance to experience the love of this humble man of God's own calling. Dr. Parks we Loveyou and we thank God for alio wing you to enrich our lives. the topics he has researched the most is heavy metal music and how it effects those who listen to it. Mr. Long has a support team that speaks with him and they share how a per sonal life with Jesus Christ can be the most exciting rela tionship anyone can be in volved in. These people share from their personal lives as athletes, musicians, and eve ryday people in the business world. Since Mr. Long has sf>ent many years working with young people he is aware of their problems and is able to share with them on their own level. Whether you are re quired to come or are there of your own free will you can expect to be touched and challenged by this man of God. Justin Ramb Staff Writer Dave Bruce 6'3" 180 lbs.
