Red Cross Blood Drive
By: Matt Haney
Assistant Editor
By now I hope that ev
eryone on campus is aware
of the Blood Drive coming
on Thursday, the28thof Feb
ruary, and is planning on
giving blood or helping in
some way. As you may
know, this is a critical time
for the Red Cross and they
need your support. Our local
Red Cross has already been
called upon to ship blood,
blood products, and blood
supplies to the Persian Gulf,
and probably will be called
upon many more times as the
ground war now kicks in. In
addition, the Red Cross sup
plies blood to Oteen's Veter
ans Hospital, a facility with
374 beds, and the Veterans
Hospital in Johnson City,
which has 1,075 beds. Once
our men, wounded in con
flict, are stabilized they will
be flown to military and vet
erans hospitals like these for
more complete treatment.
Just in case casualties are
heavy, we need to have an
adequate blood supply both
for our troops and our con
tinuing local needs.
Maintaining this blood
supply is where we come in.
It is our responsibility as
Americans to do our utmost
to support our local Red Cross
during this hour of need.
Once again I call on every
student, every staff member,
and every professor to do his
or her part. You Are Needed.
Tlie Poet's Eye

Staff Writer
"Bury me. Bury me. So
You can live so that I may see.
The Life You live when I die.
The True purpose comes
alive."
On Thursday, February
14th, many Montreat-Ander
son students heard the local
M-AC college band. Poet’s
Eye. This band played two
sets that night, proving to the
audience that they werenot
just a bunch of guys joking
around. Poet's Eye does not
joke when it comes to con
veying their walk with Christ
through their music.
"The purpose of our
music isnot only to have fun,
but also to evangelize the
audience, and to show that
the walk with Christ is im
portant," says Dave Hartman,
lead guitarist of the band; and
they do just that. The mem
bers of Poet's Eye spend much
‘Here was the toughest
guy I know-weeping
sentimental tears.’
"This old nal of mine, an ex*
ballplayer, haa open-lieart surgery.
I gave blood for the operation.
"Afterwards, 1 saw him.
He held my hand for the longest
time, not saying anything.
And then I saw: there were tears in
his eyes...
"I give blood often now. And I
always think of hitn"

time in prayer and work,
trying to make their songs
more than a bunch of words.
The band consists of four
talented musicians; lead
singer Doug Nissly, a sopho
more at UNCA; Dave Hart
man, a sophomore at Mon
treat, drummer Chad Farrand
and bassist Dean Peteet, both
freshman at Montreat. Far
rand and Hartman began
collaborating on beginning a
band last semester while at
tending Montreat. Towards
the end of the semester, they
found the other two musi
cians and wasted no time in
starting Poet's Eye. Although
trying to be as original as
possible. Poet's Eye reflects
such band styles as The Cure,
R.E.M., U2, The Choir, and
The Throes.
Although it might not be
your type of music, I invite
you to stop in Gaither on
Monday nights between
7:00p.m. and midnight to
check outPoef's Eye. Through
their music and talent, they
will show you a different
side of Christian music.
You may be asking, do I
qualify to give blood? Here
are the criteria:
Age: Donor must be at least 17
years old.
Weight: Donors ?nust weigh at
least 110 pounds.
Time Constraints: You must
not have given in the past 56
days.
If you meet these criteria, I
encourage you to eat a good
breakfast and come give
blood. If you do not meet the
criteria, please help by vol
unteering time to help with
adnunistrative work, taking
temperatures, helping the
nurses, and encouraging
those that are gjving blood.
We need you.
Remember, the gift you
give is the gift of life. This is
one of the most important
things that you will have the
opportunity to do this
semester. Thank You.
