Bookstore Blues
By Anita Allen
If, upon leaving the book
store this semester, you felt
dismayed, you wete not alone.
No booklists, long lines, and
high prices left everyone
feeling this way.
Our new bookstore man
ager, Ruth Logan (yes, you
may call her Ruth) explained.
The publishers get eighty
percent of the total price. The
business manager, Mr. Wal
ter Hall, set the twenty per
cent mark up rate on new
tests. This twenty percent
pays the overhead costs such
as shipping. If a professor re
quests new editions, the prices
increase also. Some profes
sors were also surprised at
the mark up in the bookstore.
According to Ruth, there
is good news for the future.
The Wallace Book company
purchasing students’ used
books starting in December.
This will increase the num
ber of used books to buy and
students wiU not have to sell
their books to other students.
More encouraging news
is that the business office is
looking into relocating the
bookstore. A larger bookstore
means less waiting, less
crowding, and more items for
sale.
Booklists will no longer
be used because of a compu
terized system newly in
stalled. Books are shelved in
alphabetical order by the
course number in the store.
Ruth started working at
Montreat in May of this year.
She lives in Black Mountain,
is married and has a son who
is a senior at Owen High
School. If anyone needs as
sistance, Ruth will gladly help
in any way possible. Her pro
fessional yet friendly man
agement is deeply appreci
ated.
