To£e J^our, nUe S^Cetheia CAVALIER SPORTS New Team New Outlook by Joanna Knowles Crowds cheering, players sweating, coaches yelling... the 1991 soccer season has started at M- AC! This year we have a great team with many tal ented freshmen, two re turning players, and a new coach. They come from all over the world - every where from Texas to Eng land. This year’s team seems to be an improve ment from last year, and they’re excited about the season. The first game against Warren Wilson was excit ing. Near the beginning of the game one of Wairen Wilson’s soccer players went down with a broken collar bone and there was about a twenty-minute delay. Towards the end of the first half, Warren Wilson began attacking. but M-AC’s defense, Robert Magee, Chris Roush, Phil Parker, Greg StaiT, and goal keeper Quent Johnson, remained strong. Warren Wilson did score, but almost immedi ately M-AC retaliated with a powerful shot from Akihiro Suzuki. The sec ond half of the game started off well with some shots from Aki Suzuki, Mark Tucker and Erik Brown - Suzuki scored again, followed by two more goals from Brandt Howard, and Mark Tucker, assisted by Brian Moirison. The game was exhilai’ating - there was a big turn-out, and the fans were hyped. The next two games were both rather intense. Mars Hill played well offensively, but M-AC’s defense was great - Phil Parker had a superb game and Quent Johnson was phenomenal. There were no goals in the first half, butearly in the second half Mars Hill scored. Once again M-AC equalized quickly - Tommy Wallace tied up the score with a solid header. However, despite M-AC’s excellent defense. Mars Hill scored with three minutes re maining, and M-AC was unable to recover. M-AC’s first home game was against Lees McRae. In the beginning the teams seemed balanced. M- AC’s defense again played exceptionally well. Gregg StaiT gave a top perform ance - getting his head to the ball time after time. Although it was a misera bly hot day, M-AC’s of fense worked hard, but Lees McRae ’ s All-Ameri can goalie didn’t let a single goal in. Lees McRae finally scored against M- AC in the last quarter with a free kick. Even though M-AC has lost two games, there is still much hope - with the excellent coaching from Steve Barret, assis tant coaches Andy Doss and Dave Bush, and plenty of young talent, we are looking forward to the rest of the season. focCER SCHEDUL]^ Oct. 3..
