Fall Baseball, A Time of Testing
By Janie King
The fall season for
the Montreat-Anderson
baseball team is well
underway. The season
opener against Lime
stone was a loss, but the
Cavahers, says Coach
Key, “hung in there all
the way.” The other
games against Brevard
and UNCA were both
spilt, each team winning
one game.
The baseball team is
going through some im
mense changes this year.
This is Coach Key’s first
year at Montreat, so ev
eryone, players and
coach, have a lot of ad
justing to do. Another
obstacle is the inexperi
ence of the team. Right
now, because of grades,
the team consists mostly
of freshmen, but Coach
Key feels confident that
all the returning players
will be back on the field
soon.
Coach Key is taking
full advantage of the fall
season. Because the fi
nal cuts have not been
made. Key is using this
chance to see who works
well together and to see
what the skills and
weaknesses of each indi
vidual are. Being a new
coach, he has to learn
about every person, not
just the incoming fresh
men. He has a difficult
job ahead, but is confi
dent that the team will
grow together.
The players share
that same confidence
also. Says E.L. Clark,
one of the re-
turners,
“We’re just
concentrat
ing on play
ing good,
fundemental
baseball
without er
rors, because
the team
without the
errors will be
the one to
win the
game.” The
team is using
the fall sea
son to work
hard and become pre
pared for the much heav
ier scheduled spring sea
son.
They are also using
this time for the fresh
men to adjust
from high
school baseball
to the more in
tense level of
college base
ball. Most of all,
they are using
this season to
learn an impor
tant lesson: to
play as a group,
not as individu
als. Returner
Scott Greene
states, “Mon
treat-Anderson
is really going
to be a success
ful ball club once we come
together and start work
ing hard as a team.” The
team’s regular schedule
will start at the end of
February.
Cavalier Basketball Preview
By Donna Buggs
Staff Writer
Basketball season is
drawing near, and there
are several new faces on
the Cavaliers team this
year. Two players re
turn from last year’s
team: sophmore, Sam
Chaney and sophmore,
Warren Hargrove. Fif
teen new players join the
Cavaliers this year, two
sophmores and thirteen
freshmen. The team’s
first game is on Novem
ber 5, 1991 against
Guilford Tech, in
Greensboro at 7:00 p.m.
Coach Steve Mc
Namara believes that
with only two returning
players, there is a lot of
inexperience on the
court. The team has
practiced for several
weeks and most of the
time must be spent on
getting used to the sys
tem of Montreat and how
it works. Coach Mc
Namara thinks that this
is a slow process. The
starting line-up for the
team hasn’t been chosen
yet due to the fierce
competition.
With last year’s
team, McNamara knew
that all of the team’s
members understood
their roles well and knew
what to expect during the
game with their record
being 18 wins and 11
losses. With this year’s
team, however, Mc
Namara believes it is too
early to tell the role each
E layer will take, and he
as not yet decided how
well the team will react
at gametime.
The Cavalier’s feel
ings about one another
are on a wider scale.
Some think that the
team has what it takes
to make a good team but
aren’t quite sure how to
combine their talents to
make a successful year.
Others feel the anxiety
of having to experience
the discipline and
change they will go
through with Coach
McNamara. They be
lieve that they may not
live up to his expecta
tions. Still others think
that the team is talented,
but some members have
negative attitudes that
can only be changed
under the instruction of
McNamara.
