Brian Huskey: So Who Is This Guy Anyway?
/-kf t>r»aol-»rc that
Brian Huskey has been tour
ing as aprofessional singer/song
writer/guitarist/humorist for fif
teen years. His early musical
career had its roots in London in
the early seventies while he at
tended school there as an ex
change student. The street musi
cians that performed in the sub
way stations and parks of central
London aroused his curiosity
enough to buy a guitar and start
learning licks from some of the
finest “buskers” in the world. It
wasn’t long before Brian Hus
key and his own “buskers’ union
card” and began playing every
weekend in the Piccadilly Cir
cus and South Kensington tube
stations, with an occasional show
in Hyde Park for sport.
He made enough money to
live on for awhile and eventually
buy a return ticket back to the
States. Embarking on a profes
sional career at seventeen he has
never
looked
back. Brian
Huskey
made his
way to ev
ery club in
the south
east that
would pay
him to play.
His claim
that he
would play
in a phone
booth if
there were
enough
quarters in
it wasn’t far from the truth. By
playing three hundred day s a year
in venues of every size, shape,
and demeanor imaginable he
built a loyal audience that bought
25,000 copies of his first album
“off the back of the truck” in the

In 1980
Brian Hus
key began
performing
on college
campuses
and his
tours
started cov
ering a lot
more
ground. To date he has logged
over three thousand shows at al
most five hundred campuses in
twenty-two states. “Hike for my
show to be as comfortable to
listen to as it is tor me to play it.
It’s not unlike a well-worn pair
of sneakers that fit just right-the
ones you like to wear more than
any other pair you have.”
The early eighties also
brought about duty for Brian as a
major conceit opening act. Tour
ing with two dozen national acts
as well as performances in some
of the nation’s premier show
case clubs gave Brian enough
prominence to be featured on
National Public Radios’ “All
Things Considered” in 1985.
Brian released his second
and third recorded projects dur
ing this time as well. An EP
featuring original work came out
in 1982 and a cassette-only al
bum of live material was released
in 1986. A CD/Cassette project
is currently in the works for an
early 1991 release.
Brian ’ s “Full Tilt Music and
Humor” show will be held Thurs
day night at 8:00 pm in Gaither'
Chapel.
Bottomless cont. from page
was stated; to pay for the tick
ets of all the students. Under
standably the money has to
come from somewhere to pay
for such items. When asked
what budget this money goes
directly into Mr. Hall stated,
“It does not go directly into
anyone’s budget. It goes in the
general operating fund of the
college. There seems to be the
conception by students, more
them faculty, that each fee goes
into a pot, but that just isn’t the
way it goes.” How then are we
sure that this money is going
into athletics? How does the
athletic department know that
it is not getting shortchanged?
It does in fact seem that all this
money received from students
is indeed going into a big fund
(general operating fund) and
then divided when necessary.
Mr. Hall stated that this money
did not go into anyone’s budget,
but into the general operating
fund and then stated that there
is a misconception that this was
happening. “Operating the
athletics has just cost more this
year,” was Mr. Hall’s response
when asked why this year was
the biggest increase in the fee
than any other year in the his
tory of the college ( add that
with parking.) But please
understand that this money
does not go towards paying for
new uniforms or shoes for any
athletics but does go into the
general operating fund. But
back to the supposed original
point for the $100.00 this year.
This money is used for the
payment of our tickets into
athletic games. First, I would
think that our tuition alone
would cover us as full or day
time students of Montreat-
Anderson College to get into
our own games for free anyway.
But okay the money has to come
from somewhere. Well what
about theonehundredand forty
dollars that we pay for an item
called “Student Activities?” Are
basketball games, etc. not a
student activity?
This college does indeed
want to and at times does imi
tate other area colleges. But
after calling eight other area
colleges an interesting fact
came to light. One of these eight
colleges charges students an
“Athletic Fee” in their tuition.
And eVery single one of these
eight colleges do not charge
their own students anything to
get into a sporting event. “This
is the student’s way of under
writing the athletic program,”
Mr. Hall graciously stated. If I
were you I wouldn’t hold my
breath to hear a thank-you from
the athletic department be
cause now we know the money
just goes into the general oper
ating fund, the pot^
