To£e SvQ ‘The ^Utfieia BACKPAGE Charlie Peacock Comes to Montreat Charlie Peacock doesn’t speak as a side lines critic or new comer to music. The 33-year-old Sparrow artist IS an educated observer of both the secular and Christian music worlds. The son of a jazz musician/music in structor, Charlie launched his music career in Sacramento, CA in the mid-’70s, taking his new bride with him. He played in clubs, first as a side- man, then as a solo pierformer. Unfortu nately, the road of a struggling young art ist led him to drug and alcohol addiction. “One day I’d have some lofty reason to play music,” he recalls, “and the next day I’d want to play at some bar because I knew I could drink for free.” Charlie didn’t remain a prisoner of substance abuse for long. He found his way to Alcoholics Anonymous, then - with the help of a fellow musician - he became a Christian in 1982. With new purpose in his art, he signed with Exit Records and Modern Christian Artist Charlie Peacock crafted two records. Lie Down In the Grass and Charlie Peacock, which earned praise from the secu lar and Christian music communi ties and gained him a modest but loyal group of listeners. He fol lowed these projects with a three-volume, privately distributed series titled“West Coast Diaries.” Charlie’s early mu sical influences were a diverse group of artist including Miles Davis, The Beatles and James Taylor, with an interest in R&B artist such as The Temptations and Smokey Robinson de veloping in his teen years. Today, while many artist draw their inspi ration form other artists, this is not the case with Charlie. “I’m not usu ally inspired by music,” he says. “I study writ ers alot - R.C. Sproul, the Schaeffers, Charles Colson, and A.W. Tozer. I believe the best thing I can do for my music is to study the realm of ideas of Chris tian thought.” The Charlie Pea cock Trio will be in concert January 11, at 8:00 pm, in Gaither Chapel. SGA Changes "Mr. Prattville High" poses with Miss Leslie Kiuw at the Homecoming Dance Next semester the SGA will go through some signicant changes. The major change is the absence of the now SGA President, Mr. Reid Cavnar. Reid will be leaving for Washington D.C. at the beginning of next semester to serve out an intern ship in the nation's capitol. He is planning to learn about integrat ing Christian faith into the po litical forum. In his ab-sence, Mr. Matthew Haney will be taking over the reigns of the SGA Presidency. Reid is a senior here at Montreat-Anderson and in the four years he has attended he has contributed to several areas. He was R.A. of the year in Hower ton two years in a row. President of Alpha Chi in his Junior year, member of Phi Theta Kappa, selected for Who's Who in both his Sophomore and Senioryears, and recipient of five Distin guished Scholar awards among other honors.
