Tough Week For The Cavs
Face Three Strongest Teams In Conference
By Matt Haney
The Cavs openned this past
week on the road traveling to
Virginia Intermont, to face the
#1 team in the Tennesse Valley
Athletic Conference.
Virginia Intermont domi
nated all aspects of the game,
winning 100-64. Brad Gabriel
summed the game up like this,
"They played their best game of
the season, while we took our
selves out of the game."
Returninig to the McAlister
Gym this past Thursday, the
Cavs hoped to avenge their de
feat with a win over, Milligan,
the #3 team in the conference.
They played the visitors
tough for the first ten minutes
leading 17-16 as both teams
struggled offensively. But be
fore the half ended, Milligan had
forged ahead, taking a 42 to 36
lead into the locker room.
For the first 5 minutes of
the second half, the Cavs
struggled back to bring the score
to 49-51. Milligan called time
out, regrouped, then played solid
for the rest of the game.
The Cavs kept it close, only
being down three points with
1:11 left. But on a night when
both squads played exceptional
games, only one team could win,
and that team was Milligan, with
a final score of 76-65.
To end a grueling week, the
Cavs had to face Alice Lloyd,
#2 in the TVAC. Alice Lloyd
entered the Cavs house and be
fore you could turn around had a
20-7 lead. For the rest of the
half the Cavs struggled to deal
with their opponent's defense,
commiting turnover after turn
over. At the half Alice Lloyd
had a dominating lead of 48-31.
Brad Gabriel turned it
around early in the second half,
hitting 11 points in the first 6
minutes bringing the Cavs back
to within 15. Then Brian Lever
ing hit 6 straight, and the come
back was on. The Cavs man
aged to trim the deficit to 9
points, 70-61 before Alice Lloyd
woke up and began to play like
conference leaders. For the rest
of the game they held the Cavs
off and took home an 86-77 vic
tory.
Montreat-Anderson began
the week, solidly holding the #4
seat in the TVAC, with Bryan
College a distant 5th. With 3
losses the standings
are much closer.
Although the Cavs
are going to make
the district play
offs, they neeed to
bring home a vic
tory from tonights
game with King Col
lege if they want to
host the 1st game in
the "Cavs’ House"
They also need vic
tories Thursday in
"The Cavs' House
day at Bluefield.
