ALETHEIA Volume XXVI, Number 16 Montreat-Anderson College Febmary 16, 1993 MAC Sponsors Executive Dinner By Alumni Office Special to Aletheia Montreat-Anderson College's Alumni and Career Counseling Center Offices will co-sponsor an Executive Dinner for M-AC jun iors and seniors on Thursday, Feb ruary 18, at 5:30 pm in Gaither Fellowship Hall. Faculty and staff have also been encouraged to at tend the buffet dinner, which will feature a number of alumni from different fields who will share how they chose their professions and what steps they took to achieve their goals. This is the first dinner of its kind in what is hoped to be an annual event. In keeping with the dinner theme, juniors and seniors are asked to dress in aprofessional man ner. Convocation credit will be , given to those students attending. The Montreat- Anderson team will match wits with teams such as Elon, Campbell, Methodist, UNC-Wilmington, and East Carolina University. The con test will begin at 4 pm and last until mid evening. The team members all are involved in a round-robin event, which they all describe to the Jeop ardy game show. The M-AC stu dents competing are Naj Alicea, Jeff Reardon, Kim Trapnell, Scott Ward, and Mark Wright. These Academic Competitions are held so that intellectual minds can expand their knowledge. Stu dents must research to find ques tions and answers to ask each other before each class. The competitors go the these contests is to give the other schools involved an opportunity to practice before they go on the National Col lege Bowl Competition. Naj Alicea states her reason for attending the competition: "As far as this coming competition goes, we're basically go ing for the experience and to have a good time in fellowship with students from other schools. Basi- II cally, we know we're go ing to die, but we'll have a good time doing so." Mark Wright feels that they are going because of "the thrill of Jeff Reardon intellectual god" ■pital-in, Asheville. Mark ('83) and Jeannie Barnes Ownby ('84), are both faculty mem bers at Appalachian State Univer sity and are a part of a study center called Bringing it All Back Home. This program contracts with com munity boards and agencies that have group homes. Mark is a trainer consultant who does training and initial screening of the study center’s treatment model called the Teach ing Family Model. Jeannie is a pro gram evaluator. Alpha Chi Inducts New Members Neil to Present Paper at Chicago Convention By Jamie King Tonight at 8 pm, following a Taylor and Democrat Jack Stevens. Dottie Todd Thornburg, Class of 1951 High School, is a high school English teacher and has taught at Sylva- Webster High School in Sylva NC and NeedhamB. Broughton High School in Raleigh, NC. She recently took a leave of absence form teaching to campaign with her husband, Lacy Thornburg, for Governor (who was then North Carol ing Attorney General). Students were asked to RS VP with an invitational card by Februaiy 15,1993 in the fiont office, or call the Alumni and Career Counseling Center for more in formation. how they felt they would fare in the competition, they gave several dif ferent responses: KimTr^neU - 'We've done the best we can to pre pare ourselves, now we’re going to go, have fim, and hopefully win a few rounds." Scott Ward - "I hope we do well. I'm person ally looking forward to possibly com peting against incredible odds. Per sonally I think we might do well, but I won't be disappointed if we do get killed. I'm happy just competing." Jeff Reardon has high hopes for the team. He adds, "Montreat- Anderson College will be lifted to stellar heights through the raw ce rebral power of Montreat's elite paragon. We will ascend the Mount Olympus of Academic Competi tion and we will reign forever as Montreat's 'intellectual gods'." When Dr. Risher was asked how he felt about the upcoming competition he stated, "I look for ward to another opportunity for the M-AC 'intellectual gods’ to unleash their mental energy." Valentine's Weekend A Success dinner in the fellow ship hall, three juniors, Mark Bolick, Ann- Luise Snyder, and Kim Trapnell will be in ducted into Montreat- Anderson College's Chapter of Alpha Chi. These three stu dents have met the re quirements to become members by being in the top ten percent of their class and by ex hibiting good charac ter. - Alpha Chi, the college's intel lectual group, recently sponsored, the areas two district congressional candidates. Republican Charles In April, they plan to bring Montreat another speaker. Also this April, the group plans to travel to the National Conference in Chicago. While they are there, the Alpha Chi will have a chance to listen to the Alpha Chi person of the year, Dan Rather of NBC. Mark Neil, student delegate of Alpha Chi, will also present a paper about local environmental con cerns at the conference. Mark Nell - Alpha Chi Representative to Chicago By Jamie King The Valentine's Weekend Festivi ties began on Friday afternoon when the bookstore delivered approximately 35 carnations. Although the carnations were a big hit from the people who received them. Bookstore manager Sherrie Wilcox said that they did not go over as well as she had expected and not to look for them next year. That evening during the annual Valentine's DinnCT of steak and shiirrp, the Celebration Singers sang to a few extra special valentines whose sweet hearts had requested them to do so. Following the Valentine’s Dinna-, M-A Hall sponsored the King of Hearts Pageant in Gaither Chapel, featuring: David Hartman, Phil Parker, Truit Powell, Justin Ramb, Cameron Tho mas and Biyan Wilson. These contestants presaited many hilarious and crazy antics during the con test For exanple David Hartman pre sented a humorous but excellait raidi- tion of Phantom of the Opera. Truit Powell did a Hawaiian number and flaunted his rear for all the women in the audiaice. Cummings to his girlfriend After all the chaos was finished and the contestants had answered their triviaquestions,TruitPoweU was named the King of Hearts. Concluding the Valentine's Fes tivities was the annhal Valentine’s dance, held in the romantically deco rated cafeteria. The dance was Disc Jockeyed by Sound Explosion, who took many requests, in what was a successful end to the Valentine's Weekend Festivities.
