The Aletheia Montreat-Anderson College Friday, October 15, 1993 Baseball Team Suffers Loss of "FamOy" Members Cavs Defeated by Brevard 9-5 By Kathryn Letterman The Montreat-Anderson Base ball Team received a tough break last Wednesday evening as they travelled to ETSU. East Tennessee defeated the Cavs 15 - 9 . This past Saturday the Cavs were defeated by Brevard College 9-5. It was a close game, but Bre vard spotted a weakness, and came out of the game victorious. According to Coach Chaplain, the baseball team have had some difficulties, "We've had a tough fall. There's been a lot of weeding out. Some of the guys have decided that they don't want to play. But, we’re going to go with the guys that we have, and we hope to build a good team and program." In fact, since the beginning of the season, the team has lost nine of it's players, and very few will be coming in next semester. Coach Chaplain stated the rea son for the students quitting the team: "It takes a lot of time. We Student Attendance Hi^ at Harvest Fest By Anna Shimaya The Harvest Fest was a big hit last Saturday. Cary Willcox com mented, "It was a success for the students at the college. As far as financial success, we did not do as well as we planned. However, we had a large turn-out of students. Every body that I talked to previous to the Harvest Fest, were very happy and very satisfied about it. They enjoyed the activities that were involved and would be willing to do it again." Willcox also added, "Hopefully, we can make this an annual event with the city and M-AC, and make it larger and turn into a money-making situa tion for the clubs and organizations. Even though they didn't do well this push them hard. They're young and ness makes for a good they're not used to it. Every pro gram has people that won't sur vive." Bud Roberts, a junior and member of the baseball team, com mented about the structure of the team being like a family, "After playing ETSU [East Tennessee State University] last season, we came to the conclusion that talent and ability-wise, we are very com petitive. They beat us with experi ence and strength. They're size and strength matched up against our close knit family and mental tough- Students Rate Cafeteria Food By Anna Shimaya This year M-AC has devel oped a new organization called the Food Committee. The Food Com mittee is designed to create a link between students and Jack Spen cer. The students are dissatisfied with some of the aspects of the cafete ria, but the students are unsure of to whom to voice their complaints. The Food Committee consists game. "As far as mem bers of the family quit ting, it’s tough, I admit, that with the ranning, physical and mental stress, it gets pretty in tense as far as feelings and emotions go. Then this fall season, there is a feeling of added stress for some reason. Also, Jack Spencer stated that he wants people to help keep him informed. He wants the students to give him complaints and suggestions so that he can make improvements. Lady Cavs Balanced Between Victory and Defeat By Cara Weiss Alicea, Jason Baker, Scott Bow ers, Sarah Fortney, Michael Grant, Janie King, Heath Peak, Jack Spencer, and Richard Whitmire. Janie King, chair of the committee, commented, "My biggest expectation is that we can become a link between the people [and the cafeteria The Montreat Volleyball team lately has received an even assort ment of wins and losses. This past Friday and Saturday, October 8-9, the Lady Cavs went on a weekend trip to Tennessee to face Bryan College on Friday night, and Lee and Covenant College on Saturday night. They suffered a loss to these teams, how ever, junior Carri Lucksavage reas sured, "They were really tough teams. Even though we lost, we played really year, I believe in future years we can establish this as the event for the col lege as well as for the community." All of the new games were a great success, except human bowling and it will not be present next year. well together." On Monday night, October 11, games against Knoxville and Johnson Bible College, were also played away in Tennessee. Montreat defeated Knoxville in two out of three games, to win the match. Montreat was also victorious against Johnson Bible Col lege in two quick games. The Lady Cavs challenged Tus- culum at home on Tuesday evening. Montreat was defeated three out of four games. Lucksavage stated after the game, "Tusculumisaroughteam, but we played extremely well tonight " In regard to these games, Lori EUiot also a team member stated, "They were close games." Elliot is looking positively to ward future games, "We're playing better and better because we're learn ing more and more about how each other plays." The Lady Cavs will venture to Mars Hill College on October 20, at 6:30pm. Next, they will be compet ing in the Milligan College Tourna ment, located in Milligan, Tennessee, on October 22-23. Salem College will challenge the Lady Cavs in Win ston-Salem, North Carolina, on Octo ber 26. The final game ofthe season will be against King College in McAlister Gym on October 28, at 6:30pra Soccer Team Struggling for Victory Original Activities Spark Interest By Marcy Buckner M-AC’s soccer team held their heads high even in defeat Monireat suffered a loss to Tusculum College on Tuesday, October 12. According to Jen- niferWilson, team statistician, "The team played well atthe beginning, but fell apart in the second half." The final score was 8-0, Tusculum. The Cavs were again defeated at Covenant College, Saturday, October 9, with a final score of 6 - 0. The opposing team fi'om Chatta nooga, Tennessee, is ranked in the na tions' top 20. In addition to this chal lenge, three of M-AC's starting line-ups were unable to play due to injuries. This resulted in the necessity to place players in unfamiliar positions. Sophomore Mike Wallen, stated, 'We played a good game, but at times we broke down and they capitalized on it" M-AC will play King College in Bristol, Tennessee at 4pm on Thursday, October 21. Based on King's scores in comparison to M-AC's scores, fiiom games with the same opponents, a vic tory is anticipated. An additional expected triumph awaits the Cavs when they play a home game against Toccoa Falls, Saturday, October 23, at 3pm. Once again, judg ing by Toccoa Falls scores and M-AC's scores,M-ACistheprobableconqueror. Toccoa Falls CoUege is located in Toc coa Falls, South Carolina, near Qemson. Montreat wiU challenge Warren Wilson college, Wednesday, October 27, at 3pm at Warren Wilson. When asked what expectations he has for this game. Coach Schutt replied, 'We're gonna walk all over them." Schutt's goal is to win at least four of the last five games. By Sean Anderson There are two new intramural sports: tennis and ultimate fiisbee. The tennis tournament was held this week. Many students participated. The win ners received points for their brother/ sisterhall and a T-shirt The teams were divided into three groups: single's, women's, and co-Ed doubles. The win ners will be announced at a later convo cation. The ultimate fiisbee started this pastTuesday. Ultimatefrisbeeissimilar to football. Each team consists of eight players and the object of the game is to get the fiisbee across the goal line by throwing it to the other teammates. The team that scores the most points wins. Thesixteamsconsistofthehrother/ sister halls and the staff. Paula Johnson, who is the director of the Intramural sports, said,' 'Ultimate fiisbee is an awe some game. It relieves stress and is lots of fun." The ultimate fiisbee games are heldeveiyTuesdayandThursday. Two games are played: one starting a 6pm andtheotherat6:40pm.
