mm The Aletheia Montreat-Anderson College Friday, January 28, 1994 The Seasoning of Servanthood... Students Attend Informative Seminar By Jeff Lang S.A.L.T. attempted to incor porate the radical philosophy of servant leadership into M-AC stu dents during a three day long em phasis, held Thurday through Sat urday, January 19-22. The S.A.L.T. anacronym stands for Servanthood and Lead ership Training, a concept that President William Hurt and the Montreat-Anderson College fac ulty have committed to instilling in the College's students. It is a clarion call to follow the example and prescriptions of Jesus to lead by serving and to be exalted by seeking humility. During the Servanthood and Leadership Training emphasis weekend, a number of business pro fessionals gave rousing enjoiners to students to integrate ethics and integrity with the workplace. They attempted this by pointing to their own successes as Christians, lead ing by serving in a hostile secular business context. The finale of the week was an interactive retreat held at the Cove founded by the Reverand Billy Graham. SGAPresident Jeffrey Rear don asserted, "At the retreat, stu dents were involved in exploring leadership and personality types and developing lead ership skills." Over all, attending students reacted positively to S.A.L.T. However, some of the students have levelled criticisms at the philosophy. Fresh men Environmental Science major Derek Sims expressed, "When the topic of ser vant leadership is dis cussed, I wonder if we view Jesus as only a side issue relating to the main concept, or if He is truly ACTIVITIES SCHEDULE Friday, Jan. 28 8 pm Mov\e-Last Action Hero Cav. Men's Team Smashes Bryan College During Conference Game By Sean Anderson The Cavaliers defeated Bryan College, a Christian liberal arts school, located in Dayton, Tennes see, last Tuesday by a final score of 95-82. The two teams were tied 42-42 at the end of the first half. M-AC soared with a nine point lead in the beginning of the of the sec ond half. The boys in yellow caught up quickly, and it was not long before the score was tied again. The key player of the game was New Policy Installed Cracks Down on Smokers By Jeff Lang It's here. After several years of rumors about the impending regulations, Montreat has a new restrictive smoking policy. In an effort to protect the rights of non- smokers to an environment free of harmful tobacco smoke, the SGA enacted a set of get-tough guide lines which setup specific areas in which "lighting up" may occur. Smoking outside of the new smoking niches will result in puni tive measures by both M-AC and the town of Montreat. There are only eight outdoor areas, in addi tion to 5th floor M-A Hall and 3rd floor Davis, alloted for smoking. These areas include the wooden porch off of the cafeteria facing Lake Susan and the parking lot behind Davis. Students may also smoke in designated areas in front of the Library and on the front deck outside of the Belk Campus Cen ter. The College will issue verbal warnings for first offenders, with a $200 fine for each subsequent vio lation. The town begins fines at $100, increasing to $500 by the third violation. Student reactions to the new policy are mixed. Sophomore Wayne Strojie lamented, "I think it's ridiculous that you can't smoke in the road...smoke rises!" Junior Marla Henderson, an Outdoor Rec reation major, exclaimed, "I think breathing is wonderful!" Aron Gabriel, who made a miracu lous three-point basket in the last thirty seconds of the first half, to tie the game. Leading scorers for Bryan were Mark Pack, who had 17 points, Paul Urkhart with 14, and Jason Sparring who shot 16 of Bryan's points. Sophomore and point-guard Jonathan Bennett exclaimed, "We played hard the entire game, but our execution was poor the first couple of minutes of the game. Fortunately, we turned things around in the first half and never looked back." Spectator Larry Gritton commented on the fans that cheered for the Cavs, "I think the baseball team is an excellent motiva tor for the Cavaliers." On February 1, the Cavs will challenge Virginia Intermont at McAlister Gym. Virginia Intermont is an independant Baptist college, with an enrollment of approxiamately 521 students. It is located in Bristol, Vir ginia and has a 16-acre campus. The college was founded in 1884. On February 3, the team will travel to Johnson City, Tennessee, to face Milligan College. Milliagan is also a Christ-centered school, who's motto is "Christian Educa- tion--the hope of the world." The team is in the same conference as M-AC. The Lady Cavs fought hard throughout the entire game to retain a solid lead to win over the Lions 82-63. Chris Hil- gers best described the game when he said, "The Lady Cavs trounced on the Lady Lions and turned them into pussy cats." Number 14, Shelly Thompson, lead the ladies in scoring with 22 points, 8 assists, 4 rebounds, and 2 turnovers. She was right on target during the second half with her three point shot. Other leading scorers were Amy Harkelroad with 17 points and 11 rebounds, Kristy Woody with 11 points and 6 re bounds, and Amy Baker with 10 points and 5 assists. Coach Dana Bostic said that every one played a great game. The Lady Cavs toughest con tender Tuesday night was number 24, Mandy Roberts. The All- American scored 38 points the last time they faced the Cavs and aver ages 30 points per game. Players Amy Baker and Erin Broome were assigned the task of keeping her under control and they succeeded, only allowing her 15 points, way be low her average. Coach Bostic stated that the la dies were playing well as a team and have been working hard with the confidence that it takes to win. The ladies are in an upward swing, winning five out of their last seven games. With only eight games left in regular conference play, the Lady Cavaliers have an excellent shot at making it into the Conference playoffs. The top eight teams of the Conference compete for the championship and Coach Bostic feels confident that her team can make it, if they continue to play well and as a team. It would be a great achievement for the Lady Cavaliers to qualify for the finals, being it only their second year in the conference. The Lady Cavs have a week to rest up and practice hard for their next game against VirginiaTnter- mont at home, February 1, at 6pm. The ladies were defeated by two when they last contended against Virginia Intermont. Coach Bostic stated that it will be a "tough game", but if the ladies continue to play a "smart offense" and "good defense" it shouldn't be difficult to pull out the win. The Lady Cavs will then travel two hours to Ten nessee on February 3, to vie against Milligan College at 6pm. The Lady Cavaliers will have an exciting road to the playoffs ahead of them and with most of thier last eight games on the road, it will not be an easy journey for them. While some students had strong opinions about the policy, others had nothing much to con tribute concerning the issue, "I don't smoke, so I don't care," yawned disinterested student Mark Bolick. However, student Dave Walters, Jr. defended, "I don't think it is fair to people that smoke. As long as they are outside and are away from public entrances, they should be allowed to smoke wher ever they want."
