The Aletheia Montreat-Anderson College Friday, March 4, 1994 Cavaliers Face Challenging Weekend Parker, Milligan Test Baseball Team's Talents Georgia, Brewton By Sean Anderson The Cavalier baseball team was supposed to compete against Lenoir-Rhyne College, a Lutheran affiliated school, located in Hickory, North Carolina, however, the game was put off until a later time because of the rain on Wednes day. The rescheduling of the game will be announced at a later time. Today, the team will travel four hours and 34 minutes to Milledgeville, Georgia to compete against Georgia College, which is a NCAA division II team. According to Head Coach Darin Chaplain, the team is very competitive and strong. In fact, when M-AC played them last year, they were defeated by the Bulldogs 10-5. Tomorrow, the Cavs will encoun ter Brewton-Parker College, located in Mt. Vernon, Georgia. Their base ball team is ranked in the top five in the nation, so competing with them will be a challenge, noted Chaplain. This will be the first time ever that the Cavs have played against Brewton-Parker College. On Sunday, the Cavaliers will converge with Milligan College in Johnson City, Tennessee, located about one hour and 28 minutes from Mon treat. They are in the same conference as M-AC, and have beaten the Cavs two out of the last three games played. This will be the baseball team’s first conference game of the season. Chaplain encouraged the team by com menting, "We are trying to do better. This weekend we will be playing Brewton-Parker and Milligan. Both are tough competition. It will give us a chance to compete well." The key players on the team are pitcher Mark Smith and shortstop Chad Green. Chaplain emphasized, "We have a good team this year and I think we will do well.” Pitcher Shane Hatcher declared this about how the team is going to do this weekend: "The games will be chal lenging, but we will work hard, work as a team and let our tal ents do the rest." Pitcher Travis Little expressed, "In the fall, the defense was good, but the hitting was slack. Now our hitting has come on strong. In the spring, as long as we stay con sistent, we will do well in the conference." The Lady Cavs faced King Col lege in Bristol, Tennessee last Satur day, February 26. Coach Dana Bostic mentioned that the ladies showed promise going into the game against King, with a good week of practice undertheir belts. The Lady Cavs were confident for a victory, but it just was not meant to be. King College with their strong veteran team, beat the Lady Cavs 74-50. The Lady Cavs showed a prom ising first half, but after the first ten minutes of the game, they were not playing at their best. Bostic men tioned that the Cavs forced some plays that they should not have and the women were not shooting well. Bos tic felt that "they just didn't have the desire that was needed for the win." Freshman forward Gina Granger, freshman guard Erin Broome, and freshman center Kristy Woody agreed that after sev eral key plays didn't go their way, their morale fell and they lost that desire to win. Broome commented, "We got out hustled, and we played hard, but things just didn't work out." Granger added, "[It was] a close game at first, but [King College’s] number 12 hit several 3 points shots in a row and after that we started to not play as a team." Leading the Lady Cavs in scoring was Kristy Woody with 15 points and 9 rebounds and fresh man guard Shelly Thompson with 10 points and 6 assists. The Cavs suffered a disap pointing loss against King, but Bostic emphasized that the pres sure is very different in post-sea son games, than in regular season play. This is the first time that the ladies have made it into the play offs, and also only their second season playing at conference level. Bostic did put everyone out on the court though, and added that she was glad that she received the opportunity to give all the players a chance to play and give them the needed background playing in higher pressure situations. Bostic emphasized that it was a good ex perience for everyone involved. Bostic was also pleased that the ladies made it into the Confer ence play-offs in the number eight spot, shattering previous records for the most games won in a regu lar season. The Lady Cavaliers ended their regular season with 14 wins and 14 losses and ended the post conference play with 14 wins and 15 losses, finishing eighth in the conference, but still completing their best winning season in the history of Montreat-Anderson women's basketball. ditional courses, however she ex pressed that she "would feel un comfortable" knowing that the money spent for her to take a course came from the same fund set up for students. Lankford further explained that the faculty/staff awards only cover full tuition, not special fees or room and board. Lankford ad mitted that the money funding those awards comes from the money raised each year by the college. That money is referred to as unre stricted money because no one dic tates how the money should be awarded. The unrestricted money is awarded to both students as well as to faculty and staff. "Of the million dollars we give out, about half of it we raise each year," remarked Lankford. For this year $600,000 was raised. Lank ford stressed that not all of it went to the Faculty/Staff award, a lot of that money went to Presidential Awards as well as to continuing supplements for students. Lankford announced that for next year's awards, whether Fac ulty/Staff or the continuing supple ments, will be handed out differ ently so that the money raised can be stretched. Ross and Scott Compete in Final Game Correction: Last week it was reported that 80 pints of blood was the'goal for the blood drive. The goal was actually 50 pints and the goal was not only met, but surpassed by 11 pints. By Joyce Downs Last Friday, February 25, the Cavaliers ventured to Wise, Vir ginia, to compete in the first round of the Conference play-offs. The Cavs were defeated by a mere 8 points, resulting in a final score of 96-88. "We were within two, with less than a minute to go. We made a bad pass, had a turn-over, they went down and scored, We couldn't catch up from there," recounted Coach Steve McNamara when asked why the game turned out as it did. Senior #4 Rodney Scott admitted that it was a tough game and that it "was upsetting, coming close [to winning] and not pulling it out." No matter what the final score read, McNamara praised the team’s performance. The spotlight shone on #24 Travis Ross. Ross alone, scored 32 points making seven 3- point shots, tying the school record for the most 3-pointers made dur ing a game. McNamara communicated that last year, the team was 9 and 19. This year, however, the team made an improvement to 14 and 16. McNamara expressed optimism about next year, despite the loss of the two seniors 6'3" Ross and 6'2" Rodney Scott. "They [Ross and Scott] both started and have been a big part of the basketball program," emphasized McNamara. He added that it is always hard to lose team members as they move on, but ad mitted that the losses are expected and planned for. Sophomore guard Jonathan Bennett expressed that he'll greatly miss both Scott and Ross. "I will especially miss their leadership out on the court," accentuated Bennett.
