MONTREAT COLLEGE Volume XXIX, Number 4 ALETHEIA Montreal College October 31,1996 Intramural Basketball Draws Controversy By Stephanie Italiano This year intramural basketball will be l imning on a trial basis due to problems in previous years. There have been several rumors about intramural basketball changing to three-on-three, with players using only half of the court, but, that is not the case. According to Becky Bonner, Director of Intramurals, “There will be a 5- on-5 basketball league between Fall Break and Christmas Break and league or tournament play in the winter.” Some guidelines for basketball have been established this year in an attempt to better facilitate an atmosphere of healthy competition and sportsmanship. Players will sign an individual commitment to sportsmanlike conduct. According to FJonner, "there will be mandatory atten dance at captain’s meetings and they will initially give input and take ownership in establishing the rules. There will be a ‘commissioner’ at each game - a group of faculty/staff volunteers who will start the game with an overview of rules and expectation of conduct. The intramural program committee expressed that, “the commissioner will oversee and back up the student referees, and may call official time outs to diffuse potential problems or pull a player out of the game. There will also be a stricter penalty for fouls.” All of these rules were designed with good attitudes and cooperation from both the committee and the student representa tives. The goal is to just play the game with a good attitude and a fun loving spirit. If you would like to be involved with the basketball program you need to pick up your team roster forms at student services. At least seven players should be signed to each roster and turned in by Friday, November I, to box 842. Captains, don’t forget your mandatory meeting on Sunday Novembers, 10:00 PM in McGregor lobby. Montreat College: Making a Future Out of Change President Hurt Shares His Vision By Eric R. Satter About a year ago. Taco Bell’s advertisement was, “change is good.” No, Montreat College isn’t becoming a fast food college, but students will be seeing a few changes as they continue their education. Changes like an expanded library, a brand new building for Christian Studies, a new gymna sium, and a fitness and recreation center. If this all sounds too good to Ite true, then perhaps you might invest your time in reading the President’s Report. With two years of planning behind it, this report defines the direc tion in which IVesident Hurt and the Board of Trustees plan for Montreat College. “'fhis strategic planning began back in April of 1994. The college’s state ment of purpose was approved in October 1995, and the strategic plan was passed in November of the same year,” the President said. The report starts with the college’s statement of purpose, which clearly defines Montreat’s mission, founda tions, educational objectives, vision, and affiliation. The report then moves toward it’s main purpose — Montreal’s strategic plan, which I lurt calls “A Future and a Hope.” “The strategic plan is a living document. Everything within the plan can’t happen all at once,” Hurt said. “It will depend upon funds and opportuni ties.” The strategic plan branches off into six directions: academics, student body, financial strength and integrity, external relations, college linkages, and physical plant and technology. Some of the strategic plan has already been put into effect or accomplished, such as the creation of a new soccer field and career development center. “Our greatest accomplishments toward the strategic plan for this year have been the creation of both the Bachelor of Music degree and the Master of Business Administration degree at the School of Professional and Adult studies at our Asheville and Charlotte campuses,” I lurt said. Over time, students and faculty will see new parking lots, new campus lighting, and Internet access within all residence halls and administrative buildings. Renovations will also be made in the residence halls, Morgan Science Building, Gaither I lall, and Bell Library. The library will be receiving a brand new electronic database and resources that will be electronically linked to the Mountain College Library Network with 14 other colleges and universities within North Carolina. Student’s ^ Thoughts on the Election... By Daryl Bryant “I’ll vote for Dole, because Clinton needs to be out of there.” -Shane Brannock “I voted for Bob Dole mainly because he is the lesser of two evils.” -Amy Buckner “I’m voting for Rush Limbaugh and Rich Gray.” -Jamie Jessee “I voted for Bob Dole. Clinton has had enough time being President. We need someone new who can get the job done right.” -Amy Parsley “I don’t like either of them. I haven’t decided for sure, but probably Dole.” -Zola Griffin “Clinton all the way. Dole has no chance, I don’t like Dole anyway. Me and his traditionalist ways have no chance.” -Casey Short ‘®“ “I voted straight democrat.” -Jaime Pate “I wished Frank Zappa and Jello Biaffa had won last election, so this time I’ll vote for them again even though Trank’s dead.” -Cameron Thomas “I will not vote for Clinton, because he is a big liar that doesn’t enow what he is talking about. Dole talks all about how Clinton is, but what about his own issues. Perot is just an economic wizard, but there is more issues to think about. So Mickey Mouse has my vote as write in.” -Shane Wilson “I’ll vote for Clinton, because no matter what people say he is getting the job done. We need a president who will not keel over during his presidency.” -Bryan P, Grogan “I don’t like Clinton, so I will write in Chunk for president.” -Scott T. Robson “I’m voting for Clinton.” -Kevin League “The true issue of this election is coolness; Clinton’s cool, but Dole’s a dork! I don’t want a dork to be my President! Besides, as far as I am concerned, Bill has done an acceptable job. The country is in better shape than it was four years ago and minimum wage las been raised, so why not go with what is working, not the questionable. In this situation, I’m sticking with the eft-hander, and not going to the juilpen” -ChfistianMalone i Do not let this chance to vote pass yoii byi voice your opinions, express Vjiow you feel’'/ote, ' ^
