Hulse’s Buzzer-Beater Gives Cavs Third in Daytona
By Christian Malone
Tim Hulse’s three-pointer as the
buzzer sounded gave the Cavaliers a
60-59 victory over North Greenville
and third place at the Embry-Riddle
Invitational in sunny Daytona Beach,
Florida
The day before, the Cavs fell to
Piedmont 66-56 to put them in the
third place game. The Cavaliers were
done in by the Lions’ frontcourt,
which combined for 55 of their 66
total points, led by center Chris
Kanady’s23.
The first half was a relatively even
contest between the Cavs and the
Lions. The Cavs led for most of the
first 15 minutes. They had a 30-24
lead with 7:52 left in the first half, but
the Lions mounted a 9-0 run to take a
33-30 lead and hold it the rest of the
half.
The Lions then took a command
ing lead early in the second half, and
the Cavs were unable to retake the
lead. A 14-2 run brought the Cavs
to within two (56-54) with 4:30
remaining, but after a Tim Hulse lay
up made it 58-56 Lions, the Cavs
didn’t score again, and Piedmont ran
off eight straight points to put the
game away. Hulse led the Cavaliers
with 18 points including four three-
pointers. Aaron Gilchrist added 13,
Luke Tatum 11, and Jason Sherill 10.
The loss put the Cavaliers in the
tournament consolation game against
North Greenville, which would turn
out to be a great game.
The Cavs once again started
strong, then faded at the end of the
half With the score 5-4 Montreat,
the Cavaliers scored 12 unanswered
points to take a commanding 17-4
lead 7:44 into the game. But that
would turn out to be their biggest lead
of the game. The Mounties slowly
whittled tlie lead down, outscoring
Montreat 19-5 over a 10 minute
period, taking a23-22 lead with 2:15
left in the half With one-tenth of a
second left, the Mounties hit a three-
pointer to take a 30-28 lead at the
half
Like the Piedmont had. North
Greenville took a big lead early in the
second half and left the Cavaliers to
once again fight back. The Cavs
made it a 49-48 Mountie lead, but
then, the Mounties seemed to break
away with an insurmountable lead,
scoring eight straight points to turn a
49-48 lead into a 57-48 lead with
only 3:20 remaining. But the
Mounties would stop scoring, and
Luke Tatum would catch fire.
Tatum hit three straight three-
point bombs to bring the Mountie
lead to one (58-57) with 35 seconds
left. North Greenville added a free
throw to make it 59-57 with 1.2
seconds left and set up Hulse’s
heroics.
Hulse took the inbounds pass and
let fly from behind the arc as the
buzzer sounded. For a split second,
everybody in University Fieldhouse
was in suspense, then the ball fell into
the basket, and all hell broke loose on
the floor as the Cavalier players made
a dogpile on Hulse.
Center Jeff Sheets expressed, “1
feel very comfortable putting the last
shot in his hands. Tim’s a good
player, a good shooter, and he feels
comfortable taking the big shot at the
end. Having him is a big plus.”
Tuesday night against Virginia
Intermont, the game would also come
down to a last-second Hulse shot, but
Team rallies behind Hulse’s hot shooting
this time, the results wouldn’t be as
good. The Cavs jumped out to an
early 7-2 lead, but the Cobras shot
right back, and for most of the game,
it was a see-saw battle. At the end of
the half, the Cavs put together a 15-4
run to go up 37-32, and led 37-35 at
the half
The Cobras then took the lead for
much of the second half But with
2:39 left in the game, the Cavaliers cut
the lead to 65-64 and had two
possessions to take the lead, but
couldn’t score. With 7.4 seconds
remaining, Gilchrist hit a jumper to
make it 69-68 V.I., then the Cobras
hit two free throws to set up the final
play.
Hulse once again took the
inbounds pass and put up a three, but
the shot fell short, and the Cobras
