The Aletheia, Page 4 Lady Cavaliers Mired in Slump, Trying To Break Out By Christian Malone While the men’s basketball team broke out of their losing streak last Thursday, the women continue to struggle, dropping an 87-48 contest to Milligan at McAlister Gymnasium Thursday night and a 71-64 battle to Virginia Interment Saturday night. On Thursday, Milligan was clicking on all cylinders for practically the whole game, and built a commanding lead that the Lady Cavaliers couldn’t touch the rest of the night. Milligan’s main threats came from power forward Glenda Blevins, who buck eted 22 points before being removed with 15:00 left, and small forward Doneva Bays, who scored all 13 of her points in the first half to help build the big lead. At halftime, the Lady Buffaloes held a com fortable 41-24 lead. That comfortable lead turned into a blowout in the second half. For a while. Montreat couldn’t buy a bucket, while it seemed Milligan couldn’t miss. Even the Lady Buffalo subs were hitting their shots. They held their biggest lead of the game at 79-38 with just over seven minutes left. The Lady Cavalier offense struggled in a losing effort. Amy Harkleroad scored 23 and Erin Broome added 13, but no one else scored more than five. Once again, the offensive contribu tions came from their older players, as 41 of the Lady Cavaliers’ 48 points were scored by seniors. Head coach Billy Conley stated that his freshmen need to start shooting the ball better if they e,\- pect to win. Guard Abby Higley said, “We didn’t play well tonight. Even if we had, though, they probably still would have won, be cause they really played well.” Saturday, the Cavaliers faced off against Virginia Intermont, whom they had beaten earlier this season, in Bristol, Virginia, where they fell 71-64. The game was a tough battle throughout. At half time, the Lady Cobras held a thin 31-27 lead. The second half was a neck-and-neck horse race, as Virginia Intermont fought hard to maintain their lead. Late in the game, the Lady Cobras extended it to seven thanks to clutch shooting by guard Buffie Dorton, who scored six of V.l.’s last eight points. The Lady Cavaliers fell to 3-13 (1-6 in the TVAC) with the loss. Harkleroad again had the hot hand for Montreat, leading all players in scoring with 24. Freshman Marti Keys, one of the young players Conley felt needed to step up their scoring output, added 15. S.A.L.T IV, Learning to Lead and Serve By Wes Caldwell Montreat College kicked off it’s fourth S.A.L.T. week with S.A.L.T. IV. The week consisted of speakers Eddie Staub on the morning of Tuesday, Janu ary 21, Fran and Steve Aceto on the morning of Wednesday, January 22, and ended with a weekend retreat from Fri day, January 24 - Sunday, January 26. Eddie Staub began the week dis cussing how he had sacrificed everything that he ever had, in order to serve God by helping children who had no other ...intramurals cont from page 1 for controlling their competitive fire. I am sorry that the incidents tarnished an otherwise splendid season.” Paul McMahan, a freshman player, did not even stay for the whole game the night his team played the faculty. He felt that their attitudes were “disgusting” and [he] did not want to be around them.” Inhermemo. Becky Bonner added, "The past league was characterized by sportsmanlike behavior" and the students "should be commended for [their] be havior on the court." Rob Anderson, another member of the faculty team, commented “In all the places I have been affiliated, which includes seminary. Montreat students controlled themselves the best of anv students I have seen." place to go. When asked how Eddie Staub was selected as the first speaker for S.A.L.T. IV, Ed Bonner said, “There is a student and faculty committee that selects who the speakers for the S.A.L.T. seminars will be. President Hurt suggested Eddie Staub as a speaker.” Fran and Steve Aceto, who live in the Montreat area, as well as, attend the Montreat Presbyterian Church, told sto ries about how they serve God by help ing others, as well as having led others by being RD’s at Davis dorm when they were old enough to be students them selves. The final part of S.A.L.T. IV was the weekend retreat to help Montreat students learn to serve others. When asked what the retreat was supposed to be, Ben Katner responded, “It was a chance to help the new students get to know other students, a chance to im prove spiritual growth, it was a way to serve the community outside of Montreat, and a great way to have fun, and serve God as well as others.” Katner said, “The retreat would con sist of helping out at the Manna Food Bank in Asheville, and that the students would be serving breakfast on Sunday morning at the Asheville-Buncombe County Christian Ministries Shelter. Katner then said that the purpose of this years retreat was “to get students more involved in leadership and servanthood in the community.” Finally Katner in formed that ten Montreat students were involved in the music, worship, and ac tivities that were planned for the week end retreat. About sixty Montreat students at tended the S.A.L.T. IV weekend retreat.
