The Aletheia, Page 3 Literary Magazine On Quest for Creativity Snelson and Logos Accept Submissions By Lisa Griffin Logos, Montreat’s literary magazine, is up and running again under the lead ership of Senior Mary Jo Snelson. Logos is an opportunity for students as well as faculty and staff to strut their creative stuff as they submit poetry, short stories, prose, or any kind of art work (drawings or photography). Snelson claims, “We’ll take anything creative, we really want this to be a good representation of the diversity found at Montreat.” Work should be submitted to Snelson through campus mail, she then covers up the name, photocopies it, and presents it to the Logos staff where the final se lection process takes place. The people who submitted the work will then be notified as to whether or not their piece will be published in the magazine. Snelson assures aspiring artists and writers that their identities will be kept anonymous and confidential unless oth erwise specified by the owner. Submissions this year have been relatively scarce this year, even though some classes in the English Department are required to turn something in to the magazine. The staff hopes to encourage par ticipation by offering cash prizes in three categories. A $25 prize will be given in the areas of: Best Poetry, Best Short Stoiy, and Best Art Work. Also, the staff is in search of a photograph or design to be used on the cover of the magazine. The Logos staff is aiming fora late April / early May showing of their maga zine. The deadline for submissions is March 13. Snelson wants to encourage everyone to take part in the publication, not just students, but faculty, staff, and alumni also. She wants to remind stu dents that anonymous work is welcomed and confidentiality is respected. The members of this year’s staff include: Ashley Eckler, Brenda Erickson, Arianne Frain, Denise Oblander, and Terri Worley. ...Spruance cent, from page 1 and then became a divisional vice-presi dent of Waste Management Of Asheville. After being transferred to Tennes see in the same line of work, Spruance accepted his job as Controller, in Montreat. Spruance was hired as a direct at tempt to deal with some of the recent difficulties with Montreat’s budget. Montreat’s budget had anticipated a defi cit in the traditional program while pre dicting that the SPAS program would make up for and cover this deficit. SPAS did not do that. The growth rate for SPAS dropped. The college is trying to make back some of its lost money by selling the lap tops that the SPAS students are given. The computers are those of students who did not finish the program. Spruance’s goals for the budget in clude setting up a balanced budget with a surplus. He wants revenue to exceed expenditures. Spruance would like to see the tra ditional program at full enrollment. Therefore, once we get students to the college and growth goes up, then the college can start to be more selective about incoming students. Due to a short fall of students this semester, the college is having to make up for expenses, usually covered by stu dents, out of the school’s own pocket. Procedures for business have al ready begun to change. The Cabinet will meet on Monday to discuss the limita tions on spending, cutting down, and keeping the possibility of a spending freeze open. The goal is to optimize. For example. Montreat College stationary with the gold arch costs $0.22 an envelope and is being used by some faculty for on cam pus mall when the document center can make the stationary without the gold arch for $0.07 to be used for on campus mail. Other optimizing includes carpooling to events where two or more Montreat staff must attend. Spruance expressed, “1 am delighted to be at Montreat College. It is a beau tiful place and 1 hope to make a positive contribution to the financial condition.” Upcoming Student Activities Saturday 12:30pm- Women’s Tennis at Newberry 1:00pm- Badminton Tournament 1:00pm- Baseball at Alice Lloyd 8:00pm- Movie at the Grill - ■‘Courage Under Fire” Sunday 1:00pm- Baseball at Alice Lloyd 1:00pm- Paintball Tuesday 3:00pm- Men’sAVomen’s Tennis vs. King at home 3:00pm- Softball at Milligan Wednesday 1:00pm- JV Baseball vs. Anderson at lome
