New College Sign Unveiled By Christian Malone Last week, Montreat unveiled its newest campus renovation, a new Montreat College sign across Lookout Road from the Belk Center. The sign bears the school logo (a gold arch with a large centerpiece) and says “MONTREAT COLLEGE” in big letters. The 4’xlO’ sign is made of sturdy redwood, which Jac Whatley, Vice Presi dent for Advancement and Strategic Planning, says it was chosen so the sign would last a long time. The previous sign had been made of pine, a less durable wood, and though just ten years old, was already beginning to show signs of wear. The redwood should last much longer. Davis Hall President Eddy Carty says, “Why the heck do we need a new sign? What was wrong with the old one?” Whatley answers, “When the col lege changed its name [two years ago], we went in, reversed the [Montreat- Anderson] sign, and made it into a tem- poraiy Montreat College sign. Now that we have the money, we’re finally putting up a Montreat College sign.” The wear on the old sign played a part in the decision to replace it as well. Junior Rusty Freshman spoke for a lot of people when he asked, “How much is the business office going to be taking out of our tuition for this?” Not a single penny. The money for the sign (approxi mately $2500) came out of a grant from Carolina Power and Light, which has given the college money the past three years for renovations around campus such as better lighting around campus, new signs, and other things the campus needs to fix. A number of people have noticed that the new sign no longer bears a smaller sign underneath saying, “A Christ-Centered Education.” A de-emphasizing of a Christian education at Montreat? Not hardly; just no room for it. Whatley says, “This new sign was bigger than the old one, and we saw that we couldn’t have the ‘A Christ-Cen tered Education’ part visible. We’ll probably put it up somewhere else on campus.” Whatley laughs at the suggestion that it may take away from Montreat’s reputation of being a Christian college, saying, “I think it’s safe to say that ev eryone here knows this is a Christian college.” ...OSHA continued Many steps on the college campus have already been taken and it is only a matter of time before the college is where it should be safety wise. Spruance said, “OSHA is really only concerned for employee safety. The Safety Committee wants to make Montreat a safe and healthy place for the entire community.” IW-A-N-T-ED- Restaurant Employees (April-November) Nantahala Outdoor Center Bryson City, NC Management, Kitchen & Server Positions Company-subsidized room and board Great outdoor recreation opportunities For an application call: Relia's Garden Restaurant (at the NOC) 704-488-2176 ext 175 The Aletheia Editor Arianne Frain Assistant Editor Jeremy Isaac Witteveen Contributors Shellie Bowser, Daryl Bryant, Wes Caldwell, Lisa Griffin, Christian Malone, Queen Musengwa, Jamie Pate, Josh Schatzle Advisor Dave Sperry The Aletheia welcomes student editorials subject to standards of length and clarity.
