Hom THEN: Back in Bibli cal times, messengers were often blamed for bringing bad news. Dating back to ancient times is the legend of the messenger who was punished for bringing back bad news. Rulers such as Ivan the Ter rible and Genghis Khan are among those who dealt out severe punishment to car riers of bad tidings. Today, we learn about rising and falling food prices in the supermarket. When the news is bad we often blame the grocer. In fact, grocers have little control over shifting food prices. Usually, they are just the messengers. As is often the case, there is a combination of causes for rising food prices. NOW: We learn about the bad news of rising food prices in the su permarket and mistak- enly blame the grocer. Bad weather at i-.ome and increased international demand have decreased the food supply in this country. General inflation ha 5 forced up the cost or processing, transporting and distribut ing food. When food sup plies are low and inflation boosts handling costs, gro cery prices tend to rise. There is some encourag ing news, though. Even dur ing bad times there will be downward, as well as upward, fluctuations in food prices, reports the Food Marketing Institute. Food experts tell us that buyers for supermarkets watch for these downward movements to be able to offer us better buys. They suggest that we watch newspaper ads for opportunities to stock up and save. Tasty advice, in deed, for consumers hungry for a good food buy.
