Although I cannot feelings of unworthiness. Can God help me over discover any way in which I was at fault in this come these? B.M. DEAR B. M.: You are really asking yourself why your husband has rejected you, and down inside you are feeling that maybe it is because you were not adequate in some way. But that is not necessarily the case, in spite of your feelings. It is regrettable that you are being sued for divorce, and 1 hope you have done everything you can do to avoid this. But if your husband has left you tor another the important thing now is to look to the future and do what you can to have a stable and productive life. Your letter indicates that you have never thought about God very much. Perhaps he would use this situation to make you think more seriously about the meaning of life, and the need you have of God’s guidance in your life. Yes, God can help you overcome these feelings you have. He can help you overcome the guilt you feel because he will forgive you if you turn to Christ in repentance and faith. Even if you can find no reason for guilt in the matter of this divorce, the Bible tells us that we all are guilty before God for the many sins we have committed both big and small. Jesus Christ came to take away our guilt and our sin, and by trusting him and inviting him into your life you can know the joy of full forgiveness. “As far as the east is from the west, so far hath he removed our transgressions from us” (Psalms 103:12). God also wants to help you with feelings of un worthiness. How? By assuring you of his love. You are worth something to him. You are worth so much that he sent his Son to the cross to die for you. “God so loved the world” including you “that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life” (John 3:16). Whatever the situation you face now, commit your life to Christ. He can take it and remake it as you learn to follow him each day. History of Hymns by William J. Reynolds O Word of God Incarnate, O Wisdom from on high, O Truth unchanged, unchanging, O Light of our dark sky: We praise thee for the radiance That from the hallowed page, A lantern to our footsteps. Shines on from age to age. William Walsham How wrote these lines in 1867, when he was a Church of England minister at Whittington, a pleasant far ming village on the Welsh border of England. A distinguished churchman. How was highly regarded for his unassuming manner, his love for people, and his un concern for higher ecclesiastical positions. Appointed a bishop in East London, he was best known for his work among the poor of its poverty-stricken slum area. Unlike typical Anglican bishops of his day who lived in palatial residences and rode in private coaches. How lived among the people in modest accommodations and relied on public transportation. He wrote more than 60 hymns, but only three or four are known today. In addition to the present one, they are “We Give Thee But Thine Own,” “For All The Saints Who From Their Labors Rest,” and “0 Jesus, Thou Art Standing.” “O Word of God Incarnate” expresses beautiful praise for the Bible. Every line From Gallup Polls Religious figures are prominent on the 1981 Gallup Poll’s “Most Admired” lists. Pope John Paul II, the Rev. Billy Graham, and the Rev. Jesse Jackson are among “top ten” on the list of men living today who are most admired by the American people, while Mother Teresa of Calcutta places high among the first 10 on the list of women. Here are the top 10 men and women in the 1981 Gallup audit: Most Admired Men 1981 Most Admired Women 1981 mirrors How’s love for and devotion to God’s word. The initial stanza employs four striking synonyms “Word,” “Wisdom,” “Truth,” and “Light” as names for Holy Scripture. The final stanza is a prayer that the Church may be a faithful stewart of the treasure of God’s word, and that is may always be a path to guide men. Metaphors and similes abound, reminding us of the significant influence that God’s Word brings to our lives: the Bible is a “banner,” a unifying symbol providing courage, strength, and in spiration; a “beacon” to warn of danger and a ready reference for staying on course in the Christian pilgrimage. Dr. William J. Reynolds is on the faculty of the school of Music at Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary in Fort Worth. He is immediate past president of the Hymn Society of America and was formerly secretary of the Church Music Department of the Southern Baptist Sunday school board. A lecturer, musician and composer, he has written several books on hymns and was general editor of Baptist Hymnal. 1. Ronald Reagan 2. Pope John Paul II 3. Jimmy Carter 4. Rev. Billy Graham 5.
