THE CADUCEUS.
THEN WE ALL STOOD UP AND CHEERED
These Are The Informal Talks Delivered By Our Officers At The
Hotel, Last Saturday Night.
Farewell Banquet At The Selwyn
LIEUT.-COLONEL SHEEP MAJOR GEORGE RENN GAPT. THOS. S. CROWE
“Men-
“I appreciate very much the honor
of being invited to attend you ban
quet this evening. I regret that I will
not be allowed to remain with you
through the program.
“I am proud to have been connect
ed with such a band of men as you
who have made up the enlisted per
sonnel of the Camp Greene base hos
pital. With practically no army exper
ience you have made up a force which
has won the admiration of all military
visitors to the hospital. The advance
ment from month to month has been
marvelous.
“If the full matter was left to me
for choosing I would not trade the
present Camp Greene base hospital
organization for any like band in
American war service. You have prov
en yourselves the hardest workers
and most sufficient company of enlist
ed men in such work in the United
States, in my estimation. You have
helped to build a hospital which is
ranked as the best of its kind in all
America.
“I hope that every man of you who
want to see service abroad will be
“over there” in a few months. If I had
my way in phoos, ing the force fon the
new base hospital No. 54 I would try
to take every one of you, for you have
all shown yourselves to be good men.
“My parting request is that you give
the same hearty support to your new
commander that I have enjoyed. Your
efforts have been an inspiration to
me. I am sure that I can count on you
keeping the good work.
“ thank you.
“Men and boys—
“I say men because every one of
you have acted a man’s part in hold
ing up your eiid of the work of the
base hospital.
“I say boys because down in my
heart you are all my boys. I am not
as old as I look and not as old as your
detachment commander but in my
heart I have a fatherly feeling towards
every one. of you line men who have
■worked so nobly in the building up of
our army Institution.
“I,am not a speech maker. I never
tried to make but one speech. That
was when I was a little Boy. I recall the
words of that declamation—
“I would not chew tobacco,”
Said little Robert Reed
“I would not use the filthy stuff,
It is a dirty weed.”
“ started out with the first all right.
Then I got scared. It went like this—•
“I would not chew tobacco,”
And exerywhere that Mary went to
lamb was sure to go.”
‘That was my downfall. To the chag
rin of my parents I walked off the
stage. '
“But I feel at home among you men.
I want to ask again that you stick by
me in my work as .your commander.
In turn I expect to deal with yof so
that no man can say that he has not
not been given a square deal.
I take great pleasure in being here
tonight and standing in your pres
ence.
Gentlemen:
“I know that the only disappojintment
in the hearts of you men is the fact
that you cannot all go with Colonel
Sheep when he makes the trip across
the water at some future date. But
you just wait. When your comiades
are out in the middle of the ocean
marking time for the mermaids they
will wish they were here. A few hours
on the high seas with a fine touch of
ocean sickness and they will think
Camp Greene looks mighty fine.
“You men who are anxious for for
eign service can feel absolutely cer
tain that you will be on your way be
fore 1918 is ended. Those who will get
‘over there” first and those who will
succeed best are the ones who adopt
the method of doing whatever they are
asked when of doing it at once and
well.
“At the present time you people
have the honor of belonging'to the lar
gest base hospital in United States.
The Camp Greene plant is so well
equipped and so efficient that it has
been put in a class by itself by ex
perts. It will be a great thing to tell
when you men go back home, after
Prussianism has been crushed, and
when you spin the yarns about not
having enough food nor enough cloth
es and no shoes to wear during your
service.
‘You have all been doing mighty
fine. You have made a great record.
Stick to it. Do not envy anybody. Do
your own work well.
“To those who may go across later
I spend my heartfelt wishes for suc
cess.
