ADMISSION lOc (NEVER NEGLECT THE MEN OF the medical DETACHMENT) (In Answer How To Be A Rookie.) As a new recruit in the Army Nurse Corps, one of the worst things you will have to contend with will be the men of the Medical Detachment. When you joined the army (by choice) you had no^ idea that you would have any thing less than a Lieutenant for a boss. Alas, what a disappointment. It is most important that you be very diplomatic with the ward master and his corp of efficient orderlies. By all me.ans do not allow one of them to become provoked with you. Your life will' be miserable ever after. Cat er to them all. Keep them supplied with cake, jellies, fudge, and cigaret tes from home, and of course an ex tra package of“two of Bull Durham. Never miss an opportunity to ela borate on their good looks and nicely combed hair. Also their well kept teeth. Always keep an extra safety razor on the ward of good supply of shav ing soaps and- sweetly scented pow ders. They will be greatly appreciated. Never forget extra nourishments at ten A. M. for all the Detachment Men on the ward. Impress on the night nurse that sha must insist on the night orderly sleep ing at least three hours in a comfor table steamer chair on the coolests side of the porch. Never let the other nurses assist the ward master, always do it your self. And above all things**Never under any condition give an orderly an or der merely suggest. Always sweep the ward yourself, that is not a man’s work. You will find pumping the fire bucket and- washing off the porches excellent ex ercise. Always offer to keep their socks darned, buttons on-and shirts mended and if you are fortunate enough to possess an electric flat iron keep it on the ward for pressing trousers only. If you can not do all these things and still keep on smiling perhaps the Detachment Man will think that you are a pretty good sport after all. (Anonomous.) I am surprised and disappointed at the lack of interest shown by the ma jority of the nurses in the construc tion work of The .Oaduceus, and I am making this appeal to the girls to assume some active responsibility In making our paper a success. We have among our nunmber a great deal of good material and each week there should be a general contribution of worth while articles for our R. A. N. U. section. Some say, “I have never written oe- fore.” Neither nave I. That was my first defense and ^ enter into writing in much the same spirit as I do a game of bridge—just to fill in. We want to have our nurses’ section a credit to the hospital paper. You can help to make it so. xi. your jokes or sketches are not accepted at first don’t become discouraged. Accept it like a good sport and next time make your article so worthy of publication that it can’t be turned down. It is not accepted do not blame the editor— rather thank him for not placing a questionable article before the more critical. If your article is not taken go to the editor and ask him to ex plain to you who it did not pass. But don t get hurt about it. The pubiica- tion matter is a case of "survival of the fittest.’’ Make the article b}' nurses ‘the fittest.” MISS LUCY H. DANIELS. ISOLATION NO. 1. ENLARGING PARK. Improvements to Liberty Park con tinue. Two new restaurants in the heart of the amusement reservation have been established and a photo graph gallery has been added during the past week. A new novelty store is just opened by the Imperial Novelty Cor.ipany and is a model of neatness. The new es tablishment is at the southeast corner of the park. A marble countered soda fountain and full lines of tobaccos and kodak supplies are a part of the equipment of the store. The ward surgeons, nurses, ward- master and orderlies of this ward have been very busy of late—looking for new patients. Pvt. Rupprecht” Davis, our night orderly finds it very hard to sleep these nights as the guard snores too loud on the front stoop. Our staff of orderlies was strength- ened recently by the addition of -Pvt Goddard, fomerly of the guard. Our family barber, Pvt. A. Fogg, of the meningitis department, is afraid he will lose his tonsorlal abil ity as he has only one patient in hla department at present. The diphtheria department is now solely occupied by Pvt. “Postive” ruank of the casual camp No. 1. The hospital corps personnel is very much alarmed over the proposed re turn to duty of Pvt. Lobbe of the fever type undetermined” depart ments as Lobbe seems to be th only thoroughly riled ‘ keep a supply of good ciga rettes on hand. “ We feel keenly the loss of two of Greenfldr and J’atty Mannier, who went to Allen town, Pa.
