THE CADUCEUS. AFTER THE FLIES. 21 HOW TO BE A ROOKIE Mystery surrounds the movement of a certain tall sergeant who glid.es from ward to ward carrying a big bot tle half filled with milk. Many people have thought that he was connected with the mess depuartnjent and that he makes a test of the milk furnished the patients. But it is not so. He is Sergeant Har rington the official anti-fly maij. The big glass bottle that he carries does contain real milk and • other things. The other ingredients are poisons which have brought death to thousands of flies since Sergeant Harrington be^ gan his quiet rounds and since the flies started to sip the milky prepara tion he leaves in the wards. ing, finished his law clerkship in the University of New York. He entered the army at once, as a private. On Wednesday of this week he was noti fied of his- commission as a captain. Captain Darling is at .the head of the medical supply depot of the base hospital. He has been at that post since February when he was sent to Camp Green from Camp Lee. The present Captain Darling was just about to enter a New York law offic^ last summer, when he realized that the call to arms was stronger than the call of his profession. He enlisted and was sent to West Point for preliminary training. While there he was made a private first class. Before the summer closed Private Darling was transfered to Camp Lee, Va., to work in a supply office and was made a sergeant. Soon he was a sergeant first class and before Feb ruary had been commissioned as a lieutenant. Captain Darling has been most suc cessful in his work of managing the affairs 6f the thospital supply. He is to conduct a practical course in the training of officers in a knowledge of medical supply departments IN TWENTY DIFFERENT WAYS. 1. Salute every one in uniform. 2. Go to town wthout your leggings. 3. Peel free to leave your shirt un buttoned and sleeves rolled up on sultry days. 4. Ask the captain for a cigarette 5. Wear pink silk pajamas. 6. Climb the flag pole and sing, “Die Wacht Am Rhine." 7. Go A. W. O. L., then return and ask for a furlough. 8. Give the officers “At Ease” when they wish to. talk to you. 9. Spill the contents oi' your mess- kit on some one’s head as you pass the tables. 10. Wash your mess-kit in the slop pail and wipe it on your shirt. 11. Invite yourself to dine with the major and then return his favors by asking him to take mess with you at the mess hali. 12. Always be absent on pay-day, then ask your bunkie to loan you thirty dollars. 13. Spend your noon hour on the sun porch at the nurses’'home. 14. Write something for The Cadu- ceus about the nurses. 15. Slap the captain on the back and say, “Wha’d’ye say ole’ sport, gimme a furlough.” , IG. Wear an officer’s hat cord for a sock supported. 17. Every time you speak to an ot- ficer, present your compliments; if he laughs at you, repremand him for In subordination. 18. Talk with the high officials con fidentially and and advise them freely about how to manage the hospital. 19. Ask the top-sergeant for the key to the drill grounds. 20.
